Colin Thackery, an 88-year-old Chelsea pensioner auditioned for season 13 of ‘BGT’ singing “The Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler. This performance was a tribute to his late wife who died in 2016. There wasn’t a single dry eye in the house. Take a look at his heartfelt audition below.
Veteran Colin Thackery Completely Blew Everyone Away On ‘BGT’
After sharing his emotional story about the love he shared for his wife, he commanded the stage with an equally amazing performance. Members of the audience began to cry and he received a well-earned standing ovation. “It was just the most perfect tribute and you sang with such heart that it affected all of us deeply,” David Walliams said.
“You showed everyone that it’s never too late to do the things you love and sing about the people that you love,” Alesha Dixon said. Amanda Holden praised all of the men and women that have fought for their countries. Simon said that Colin is “what the show is all about.” He was voted through to the Semi-Finals where he was joined on stage by the Chelsea pensioners to sing “We’ll Meet Again” by Dame Vera Margaret Lynn.
He was voted through to the Finals where he sang “Love Changes Everything” by Michael Ball. He was 89 years old at the time of the Finals and gushed about being a grandfather. Red poppy flowers rained down like confetti during his stunning performance which left the judges in awe. David said that Colin was “unbeatable” which turned out to be true when Colin was declared the winner of ‘BGT.’
What Did Colin Do After Winning The Show?
Immediately after winning ‘BGT,’ Colin went to compete on ‘BGT: Champions.’ He sang “Supermarket Flowers” by Ed Sheeran. Though he did not advance further on in the show, the judges all remarked at how great it felt to have Colin back on the stage.

Colin was signed to Simon’s Syco label in a joint deal with Decca Records. He went on to release his debut album “Love Changes Everything.” The album received the Brits Breakthrough Award.
Colin also released a book about his life. As for his ‘BGT’ winnings, Colin has some big plans for the money. He wanted to give back to the Royal Hospital Chelsea. “I live in a wonderful place and I want to make a donation to that,” he said. In March, Colin celebrated his 90th birthday, He is the oldest winner ever of ‘BGT’ and is still living his best life.
