Sarah Ikumu picked “And I’m Telling You” by Jennifer Hudson to sing during her season 11 ‘BGT’ audition. The 15-year-old was questioned for her bold song choice but put everyone’s worries to rest when she opened her mouth to sing. Watch her jaw-dropping audition below.
Sarah Ikumu Blew The Judges Away With Her Whitney Houston Cover
Immediately when the song started, Sarah proved her vocal prowess hitting each and every note. She showed off a huge vocal range and nailed the song. The judges and the audience gave her one of the longest standing ovations in ‘BGT’ history. Even before the judges could give their critiques, Simon Cowell very quickly hit the Golden Buzzer which made everyone so happy for Sarah. Her family ran onto the stage to give her hugs and show her how proud they were.
“I was in total disbelief!” she told Talent Recap exclusively after receiving the Golden Buzzer. “I remember my only prayer was that I could make it through the first round and that Simon would let me sing ‘And I Am Telling You’ and didn’t tell me to change the song!!”
“Receiving the golden buzzer is something I never even dreamed about, so in that moment I was in complete shock but also extremely excited and grateful” she continued on to tell us.
“Look, Sarah, I’ve heard this song a lot,” Simon said once the crowd settled down after the Golden Buzzer moment. “It started off really well, like yeah this girl is great then it was like you became possessed halfway through. It was quite incredible and for someone of your age to stand on this stage with all the nerves and all the pressure to not only nail the song, you made it your song.” Amanda Holden called the performance “mindblowing.” Alesha Dixon actually said that she didn’t press the Golden Buzzer because she wanted Simon to press it. “I want you to go far and I think that Simon can help you because you are a superstar,” she said.
Simon giving Sarah his Golden Buzzer was such a special moment and we will never forget it. Where Is Sarah Now?
After competing on Britain’s Got Talent, Sarah released her debut single called “Save Me.” She posted it on her Youtube channel with over 33,000 followers along with Spotify and YouTube.
“I’ve had the pleasure of competing in the reboot of Showtime At the Apollo in New York, where I reached the final and eventually finished runner up” she told us. “I’ve since performed for the United Nation Trust Fund, We Day at SSE Arena, NSPCC, Apollo Theatre spring gala and Apollo in the Hamptons, where I performed with The Roots, Taste of Abu Dhabi and Hurricane Maria Memorial in Dominica.” She also recently posted a very touching tribute to George Floyd, the man who died at the hands of police in May. She sang “Glory” by Common and John Legend from the movie Selma.
After a brief hiatus from posting singing videos on Instagram, Sarah wrote “I know I haven’t posted any singing in so long but I promise I’ll be posting more often and I’ll be releasing new music very soon!”
In the meantime, she continues to look absolutely gorgeous and glamorous in her posts.
“I’ve had so many amazing opportunities off the back of ‘BGT’ and will forever be grateful to have taken part in the show and for Simon giving me his Golden Buzzer” she said.
