Two of the most beloved talent shows on television, The Voice and American Idol, always go head to head on Monday nights. This coveted 8 p.m. time slot was once again dominated by The Voice, which is in its 20th season. Not even ‘Idol’s recent comeback twist was a match for the hit NBC show. With only a few weeks left before both show’s finales, can American Idol’s ratings make a comeback too?

‘The Voice’ Beats ‘American Idol’ Ratings Once Again

The Voice has established itself as a staple for fans of singing competitions. Season 20 of The Voice has topped American Idol viewership on Monday nights this year. It also bested the entire Monday night’s lineup of shows this past week.

The Voice brought in nearly 6.2 million viewers during the April 19 episode. American Idol pulled in just a little bit over 4 million views on the same night, which was low in comparison to the show led by Kelly Clarkson and the rest of the celebrity coaches.

Season 19 of American Idol saw its highest ratings during its Sunday night premiere on February 14 with 6.9 million viewers. Since then, the Sunday night ratings have been on a pretty steady decline, only seeing a jump during the March 28 episode. The Monday night ratings have been pretty consistent, averaging about 4.8 million viewers per episode.

The Voice premiered on March 1 with just over 7.7 million viewers. While the ratings for the Monday night episodes have been on a steady decline, it’s still enough to best American Idol once again. The Monday night episodes have an average of 6.8 million viewers. Both the Monday and Tuesday night episodes have been absolutely owning the 18-49 demographic.

What’s the Real Reason Behind these Ratings?

Truthfully, there isn’t really a correct answer as to why The Voice is dominating American Idol in ratings this season. It all just boils down to what kind of competition show viewers like to see more. The Voice seems to be a bit more competitive as contestants are put into battles head to head and sorted into teams.

On The Voice, we definitely see a bigger emphasis on finding country singers or country stars. They usually land on Blake Shelton‘s team. He is almost always mentioning his country roots and how this can help him mentor contestants better than the other coaches.

Luke Bryan may be the reigning ACM Entertainer of the Year, but the American Idol judges are looking for the next big superstar regardless of what genre they are from. There is also a lack of country artists in the live shows of American Idol this year. All but two have been eliminated from the competition.

Country lovers make up a huge block of voters on talent competition shows. Looking at the history of successful contestants from The Voice and American Idol, a large chunk of them are now established country artists.

Is American Idol not pushing the country agenda enough this season? Or is the camaraderie between the coaches on The Voice just so good that people simply can’t get enough? Comment your thoughts below!
