Tyra Banks on ‘AGT’ Fallout: “She (Gabrielle Union) Wasn’t Speaking in Anger, She’s Speaking in Pain”
Last week we saw AGT‘s current host Terry Crews finally address the elephant in the room but now, our girl and ex America’s Got Talent host Tyra Banks has spoken out in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, lets recap it all.
Tyra Banks on ‘America’s Got Talent’
Tyra Banks hosted the show for two seasons and this is how she described the action going on behind the scene, “I almost kind of like dipped my toe in and left, so I’m not really immersed in the culture.” Banks says.
“Like people ask me about Victoria’s Secret, I can wax poetic about that — I was there for 10 years.”
Tyra defends Gabrielle Union
Although Tyra did not dwell on her experience with the show, she did pat Gabrielle on the back for speaking her truth.
“What I love about what she did is she was very vulnerable. I wasn’t super close to it, but I saw some of her tweets,” Banks shares. “I thought it was maybe beautiful… how she wasn’t speaking in anger, she’s speaking in pain like ‘I’m trying to get through this… and I’m crying.’”Tyra Banks on the ‘AGT’ Controversy.
Tyra also applauded Gabrielle’s husband, Dwyane Wade, for supporting her during this difficult situation.
The ‘AGT’ Controversy
As soon as the news of Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hugh not returning to America’s Got Talent as judges hit the stand, unnamed sources came forward claimed Gabrielle Union was let go for calling out the show’s “toxic culture.”
There have also been claims of racism and sexism prevalent in the show. There has not been much said directly by Gabrielle on the issue other than subtle shade here and there. Her husband, Dwayne Wade did tweet in her support.
NBC did address the issue and are looking into it. Quite a few celebrities have spoken out about it but Terry Crew’s interview last week was revolutionary.
Terry Crew’s Response to ‘AGT’ Controversy
Things have become even more tense recently after current host Terry Crews praised the NBC reality show in an interview on Friday saying, “I have never been in a more diverse place in 20 years of entertainment.” Crews went on to call his time on the AGT “the best experience I ever had in my entire life.”
He further added, “When you look at what the allegations were about, it was given by an unnamed source. My thing is – it’s funny because I believe you should listen to women, you should always believe women so I asked my wife what I should do. She was like, ‘first of all, if it’s coming from an unnamed source – because Gabrielle Union has not made any statement to this day about any of these allegations publicly – …if she hasn’t made a statement, why would you?”
Gabrielle responded either to Terry Crews or she was just done with everybody questioning her, and just finally decided to ditch being subtle.
Gabrielle Tweeted, “Maaaaaan… We all agreed to let the investigation be completed before speaking but if we doing this… ohhhhh baby let’s gooooooooooo!”
She went on to Tweet, “Thank u! Cuz girlllllll Truth telling, wanting change & having MULTIPLE witnesses who bravely came forward to let EVERYONE know I didn’t lie or exaggerate, really exposes those who enthusiastically will throw you under the bus, forgetting quickly who stepped up 4 THEIR truth.”
She added on, “Let’s also talk about where the diversity is in the hair & makeup dept for contestants that DOES NOT reflect all that diversity that hits the stage. Let’s Google the exec’s that run the show & ask follow up ?? about THAT egregious lack of diversity. Let’s discuss the facts.”
Banks also praised Union’s husband, Dwyane Wade, for supporting her during this difficult situation.
