Things are bound to get awkward when Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton attend the same award show. But some drama seriously went down on Sunday night at the Academy of Country Music Awards during Miranda’s medley of hits.
For those who need a refresher course, the country stars were married from 2011 to 2015. Both stars have ties to the talent show world, with Miranda getting her start on the country competition Nashville Star, and Blake being a coach on The Voice since the first season.
Blake Brought Gwen To The Show
Blake is currently dating former Voice coach Gwen Stefani, whom he brought to Sunday’s awards. Miranda also used the night as an opportunity to make her red carpet debut with new husband Brendan McLoughlin. She announced the surprise marriage in February.
Gwen posted a photo of her and Blake at the show on Instagram, and also gushed about his performance in several Instagram Stories. The couple apparently skipped the red carpet, perhaps to avoid an awkward run-in.
Miranda Changes The Lyrics To “Little Red Wagon”
The real drama came when Miranda took the stage to perform a medley of her songs. During “Little Red Wagon,” she changed one of the lyrics in an apparent attempt to shade Blake.
“I live in Oklahoma,” Miranda sang on the original. At the time, she and Blake were still married. They lived together in the state. However, Miranda changed the lyrics in Sunday’s performance to “I got the hell out of Oklahoma.” According to Entertainment Tonight, she’s done this at shows before, but never with Blake present.
Obviously, the apparent dig got fans on Twitter talking. As you can probably guess, people’s opinions seemed to be divided according to which artist they’re a fan of. Miranda fans were totally feeling it, calling it “the type of energy I love” and “the funniest thing” they’ve seen in a long time.
Other viewers were less than impressed with the lyric. Some people argued that she should get over Blake and move on. Others noted that it was rude to apparently diss an entire state of people, many of whom are fellow country artists.
Were Blake and Gwen Even In The Audience?
As much as fans might have wished for the ACM cameras to cut to Blake’s reaction while Miranda performed, it’s possible he may have been MIA at the time.
A source told InTouch that Blake and Gwen got up during a commercial break and weren’t in the audience during Miranda’s performance. Someone on Twitter also claimed to have seen seat fillers in the couple’s seats while Miranda was on stage.
It was probably a good move on Blake and Gwen’s part to leave, otherwise the internet would be making reaction GIFs for days. Let’s just hope none of this season’s Voice contestants choose to sing “Little Red Wagon.”
