Twitter Can’t Forgive Abusers Bill Cosby & R.Kelly As They Beg For Releases Due To COVID-19 Outbreak In Prisons
Although the state of Pennsylvania has planned to release some inmates early to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, Bill Cosby will not be one of them. He is currently serving a three-to-10 year sentence on a count of sexual assault. This comes after R. Kelly asked a New York court for an early release for the second time because of COVID-19 concerns. And people are not happy about these former stars trying to be let off the hook.
Bill Cosby At A High Risk Of Catching COVID-19
Cosby’s publicist put out a statement this afternoon: “But, with the surge of the COVID-19 plague and its effects on the health of the elderly, people of color and the fact that Mr. Cosby doesn’t have the luxury of social distancing (due to his blindness) — makes him a candidate to be released and remanded to house arrest.” While it is true that elderly people, people of color, and those with disabilities are more susceptible to getting the deadly virus, it is more than likely that he will not be released early.
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf ordered the temporary release of the inmates considered to be “non-violent” and those who are eligible for release within a year. Cosby does not fit this criteria for an early release. “Mr. Cosby is not eligible for release under Gov. Wolf’s order since he was convicted of a violent offense (aggravated indecent assault) and was deemed a Sexually Violent Predator,” Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Kate Delano told Deadline. “So for both of those reasons, he would not be eligible to be released.”
R. Kelly Begs To Be Released Early For A Second Time
Initially, Kelly’s first plea to be released early was immediately shot down. At the time there were no cases of COVID-19 at the Chicago correctional facility he is housed in. He cited his age and his health as two main causes of concern as to why he could be at risk of contracting the virus. Now, there are six confirmed inmates infected with COVID-19 in the correctional facility as well as seven staff members. In his emergency release memo, it says the singer is under “tremendous stress and anxiety” because of virus concerns.
Kelly is still awaiting trial in New York. His charges include racketeering, transportation to engage in illegal sexual activity, and coercion of a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity, and several others. Now he is awaiting trial in Illinois for separate sexual abuse allegations and is currently being held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. It seems like celebrities who commit crimes do not want to face the consequences. But, the law is the law and they decided to break it and should not be released just because they are celebrities.
People Don’t Think Either Of Them Should Be Released
After the crimes these men have committed against innocent people, its no surprise that some are not so forgiving. One Twitter user wrote, “Just saw a tweet saying Bill Cosby and R. Kelly should be let out of prison due to coronavirus and hm, absolutely not.”
Another Twitter user demanded that his entire team be arrested for knowing of his crimes and not doing anything about it.
One Twitter user questioned why Kelly’s trial has been pushed to September and now all of a sudden he wants to be released because of COVID-19.
How Other High-Profile Convicts Are Dealing With Their Sentences Amid Pandemic
This comes after convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein tested positive for COVID-19 at Wende Correctional facility in New York. He was put into isolation for 14 days. Weinstein is guilty of committing a first-degree criminal sexual act against production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and of the third-degree rape of aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. He is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence. Although he contracted the virus, Weinstein has not received any sympathy. The turmoil and trauma he put women through will never be forgiven.
One Twitter user wrote “Very sad to hear Harvey Weinstein recovered from corona. Like we said, people do not feel bad for these abusers.
Someone who has been let off the hook is rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine who was released early from prison two weeks ago. The rapper who suffers from asthma was at risk for contracting COVID-19. He is now on house arrest after serving a few months of his sentence for racketeering.
