Simon Cowell has become quite a softie in recent years, and one of his nicest moments came in 2018, when he promised 13-year-old Jeffrey Li that he would buy him a dog if he did well.
Jeffrey went on to deliver an incredible performance of “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban. Did Simon make good on his promise? Read on to find out, and watch Jeffrey’s audition below.
Simon Cowell Promises Boy A Dog On ‘AGT’
When the judges asked what he would do if he won the million-dollar prize, Jeffrey responded, “I’m the only child, so I would love a companion. I guess a dog.” His parents could be seen laughing off stage.
When he later shared that “You Raise Me Up” helped him through his loneliness, Simon added, “Because you haven’t got a dog.” The judge then declared, “If you do well, I’m gonna buy you a dog.” He told Jeffrey, “Let’s do one for the doggie.”
It’s safe to say Jeffrey did very well in his performance. He showed off a powerful voice that had the audience cheering and getting on their feet. “I think you might be getting a puppy pup soon,” Heidi told him.
Simon kept Jeffrey in suspense, withholding his thoughts until the other judges voted. He then told the young singer, “I think this was an amazing audition, so I’m gonna keep my promise … You just got yourself a new dog.” He said they would choose one together.
Did Jeffrey End Up Getting His Dog?
When Mel B asked if Jeffrey had asked his parents for permission, Simon said, “Too late!” Jeffrey later said he felt a little bit “weird” about the offer, saying it was “the last thing I expected Simon to say.”
So did Jeffrey ever get that dog he wanted? Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he did. In an interview after his audition aired, Jeffrey told the interviewer, “If I had a dog right now, I would have brought it with me.”
Not long after his audition, Jeffrey posted an Instagram photo in which he holds a drawing of a dog. He captioned it, “Even though I don’t have a dog now, at least I can draw as many as I want.” We’re not sure if his parents disapproved, or if Simon went back on his word.
Jeffrey didn’t make it past the Judge Cuts on AGT, but he recently released a song called “Anniversary,” which you can listen to here. Maybe one day he’ll get that dog he wanted.
