JoJo Siwa has been the face of a recent blackface scandal after fans have pointed out the alleged use of blackface in one of her music videos. Siwa was quick to reply to claims on Twitter in a lengthy post but fans aren’t buying it.
JoJo Siwa is the latest celebrity to face online backlash after fans pointed out the alleged use of blackface in her ‘NONSTOP’ music video. The internet star refused to apologize but instead used the opportunity to disregard ‘personal hate’ she has received.
“People were sending me really horrible and disgusting messages about my appearance, my sexuality, my content, and overall just being hateful. I didn’t do anything that needs an apology,” she said to her Twitter followers. “This is me clearing things up.”
The 16-year-old singer and entertainer told critics that the backing dancers in the video were dressed as animals and were not in blackface. Siwa continued to address the claims, calling the assumptions ‘awful’.
Following the statement, a large majority of fans responded in anger towards the singer for her response to the recent criticism.
“we asked for an apology, this is NOT an apology. this is defending yourself when poc TOLD YOU THAT WHAT YOU DID WASNT OKAY. cmon,” wrote one user. “ur almost a adult so maybe Act Like One,” responded another.
Just a few weeks prior, Siwa was criticized for not using her platforms with millions of followers to speak up on the Black Lives Matter movement. Instead, the 17-year-old told commenters that such comments were ‘NOT going to be allowed’.
“This is for all the people I blocked today… Peace out girl scout,” she wrote. “This is my Instagram and anyone who is going to be mean is NOT going to be allowed on here. People are bossing me around, telling me who to follow, what to post, what to like, what to say, what to do, everything.”
