The Negative Media Attention And Headlines That Almost Shattered Kehlani’s Music Career

Kehlani’s new album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t is a hit with fans. The coronavirus pandemic caused her to film music videos inside of her home and her plans to open up Justin Bieber’s Changes tour were postponed. Yet, she still managed to show how far she has come as an artist. Her life wasn’t always on such an upward path.

Kehlani Grew Up In A Troubled Home

The singer grew up in Oakland, an area that is plagued with violent crimes including assault, rape and murder. Her mother had an ongoing battle with drugs so she was raised by her aunt. At one point, she was even put into foster care. She auditioned for America’s Got Talent. Her act, PopLyfe actually made it all the way up to the top four. She was actually told by judge piers Morgan that she would be more successful as a solo act. Little did she know, he was right. Kehlani caught the eye of host Nick Cannon who helped her pay for studio time and create some of her first mixtapes. All the while, she was homeless and did not have any money for food. She would often steal things like iPhones and groceries to help stay afloat.

Kehlani attempted to get back into the music scene with no money and eventually began working on her own solo stuff. She credits Cannon for helping her out when she needed it the most. She looks at him like an uncle. After Billboard called her second mixtape, You Should Be Here, the “year’s first great R&B album” in 2014, she was on top of the world. But then it all quickly came crumbling down.

The Media Put Kehlani’s Relationship With Kyrie Irving On Blast

Of course, as her music became more mainstream, Kehlani was in the headlines a lot more. She began dating NBA star Kyrie Irving in 2016. The two looked like they were so in love when they posted on social media or were seen in public together. But, when the rapper PARTYNEXTDOOR posted a picture laying in bed with someone, people began speculating. In the picture, you could see a hand featuring tattoos that looked exactly like Kehlani’s. This sparked a ton of media speculation and headlines that called out Kehlani for cheating on Irving. Irving has a huge fan base and everyone knows that fans can be a little tough when defending their favorite celebrities. People were saying such mean things about her and accusing her of being a liar and a cheater. Irving actually revealed the two had broken up before the picture was even taken.

But, the damage was already done. Kehlani could not fathom that so many people were being so cruel. She attempted to take her own life. “Today, I wanted to leave this earth,” she said in a social media post on the day of her attempted suicide. “When you Googled my name that’s all you saw for months. I was terrified to go outside. I was having panic attacks in restaurants because I thought the waiters were looking at me about it,” she told the Los Angeles Times. This whole event even caused her to have severe PTSD.

Kehlani Overcame The Obstacles And PTSD To Get Back Into Music

After retreating to Hawaii for a while and cutting off her hair, Kehlani had a fresh start. She released SweetSexySavage in 2017. Some of the songs from the album even peaked on the Billboard Hot 100. She even went on tour with Demi Lovato. All the while, she has always made a point to speak about mental health and her experiences with depression. These are important issues that a lot of people go through so she can relate to them on that level that she is a survivor.

In October 2018, she announced that she was expecting her first child with her guitarist Javaughn Young-White. Her daughter Adeya was born on March 23, 2019. Kehlani recently posted a sentimental Instagram post after her daughter turned one. She wrote, “it’s been a year of beauty, even the tough times were sweet with you.”

She clearly loves being a mother and really embraces how powerful it is to give birth to another human life.

Thankfully, Kehlani’s career is thriving and it just goes to show you that you really can work your way up from the bottom to the top of the charts. She has not had an easy life with everything handed to her, but now with new music and motherhood she is in a much better place.
