The Incredible Journey Of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Breakout Singer Calum Scott
Calum Scott looked super nervous as he auditioned for season nine of Britain’s Got Talent. His sister Jade auditioned before him but failed to impress the judges. Calum sang Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” in an audition that now has over 300 million views on YouTube. Check it out below.
Calum Scott Had An Emotional ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Audition
Calum’s audition earned him a standing ovation from the judges and the audience. His sister was extremely proud as she watched him slay the song from backstage. Literally, without any of the judges giving Calum their feedback, Simon Cowell hit the Golden Buzzer. This was an absolute shock because it never happens on Britain’s Got Talent. That’s how you know Calum was destined to be a huge star. “Calum, you completely sucked us all in” Alesha Dixon said after the big Golden Buzzer moment. “It was special and after what happened with your sister as well I’m so happy for your family.” Amanda Holden praised him and said “this is your moment.”
David Walliams said Calum took them on an “emotional journey.” But everyone wanted to know what Simon had to say. “I’ve never ever in all the years I’ve done this show heard a guy with the talent you’ve got,” he said. “And the version was sensational and that shows to me that you’re more than a singer, you’re an artist, that’s why you got that,” Simon said pointing to the Golden Buzzer. Calum sang “We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off” by Jermaine Stewart in the semifinals. Simon told him that he sounded like a recording artist.
Calum advanced to the finale where he sang “Diamonds” by Rihanna. Nerves definitely got to him as he forgot some of the words in the song and was a little shaky. He finished the competition in sixth place. But that didn’t matter because the entire world was mesmerized by Calum’s incredible music abilities.
He Went On To Pursue Music After His ‘BGT’ Success
After his success on Britain’s Got Talent, Calum released his cover of “Dancing On My Own.” It eventually climbed to No. 2 on the UK Singles Charts in the Summer of 2016. His cover was also the most downloaded song of the summer in the UK. It made the Top five on iTunes in America and Canada. He later signed a record deal with Capitol Records. While people were shocked he didn’t get signed by Simon’s label Syco, Calum was excited for the next chapter in his life. In 2017 he went on a tour all across the United States leading up to the release of his breakout single “You Are the Reason.” Calum went on to release his debut album in 2018 called “Only Human.”
Before the album’s release, a second version of “You Are the Reason” with Leona Lewis was released. It has been a smashing success. The music video has over 302 million views on YouTube. This version peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Digital Songs Sales chart. Leona performed the song with Kodi Lee on America’s Got Talent.
Calum Scott Shared His Coming Out Story
He also spoke out about his sexuality and came out to the world. “There was definitely a point in my songwriting where I was struggling to come to terms with my sexuality,” he said during an interview. “I had press that was trying to look into my private life and start exploring past relationships. By this point, as of three or four years ago, my dad still didn’t know I was gay.” He continued, “So I was in the position that if I don’t speak to the press soon, and if my dad finds out through the media, it’s a really unfair way for him to find out about his child. I was just in a real predicament.”
Calum announced recently that he will be working with Mind Charity for Suicide Awareness Week. Mental health has always been very important to him and says it is “a subject very close to my heart.”
Calum has a bright career ahead of him and it’s amazing that it all started with the push of the Golden Buzzer on Britain’s Got Talent.
