The Drag Community Reacts To ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Star Chi Chi DeVayne Passing Away

Chi Chi DeVayne, one of the most beloved and well-known drag queens has sadly passed away at the age of 34. The RuPaul’s Drag Race star’s death has shattered the hearts of millions of fans all over the world.


‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Star Chi Chi DeVayne Died After Hospitalization

Chi Chi, whose real name is Zavion Davenport, was best known for appearing on season eight of RuPaul’s Drag Race along with season three of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars. Chi Chi was hospitalized with high blood pressure and suspected kidney failure. She previously had catheters installed in her heart and kidneys before undergoing dialysis. The drag star was very open about living with scleroderma, a rare condition caused by the immune system attacking the tissue under the skin, and around internal organs and blood vessels.

In 2018, when she first went public with her diagnosis, she said she had been ““Bottling this up has had me in a state of depression … it has made me hate my appearance … and also made me stray away from the public eye but I’m no longer hiding and living in a state of fear … I just ask you all to keep me in your prayers as I battle with this life-changing illness.” She also recently asked fans to keep her in their prayers before losing her fight to this battle.


The Drag World Is Shattered And Broken-Hearted

“I am heartbroken to learn of the passing of Chi Chi DeVayne,” RuPaul said in a statement provided to EW. “I am so grateful that we got to experience her kind and beautiful soul. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten. May her generous and loving spirit shine down on us all.” Longtime friend and fellow RuPaul’s Drag Race competitor Kennedy Davenport also posted a somber tweet remembering the bright light that was Chi Chi.

RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars winner Trixie Mattel shared a picture with Chi Chi.

Fellow contestant Thorgy Thor also posted a sweet tribute to Chi Chi after competing together.


“Rest in Power Angel! Seriously one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Zavion Davenport Chi Chi DeVayne we will miss you!” drag queen Ongina wrote on Twitter.

Fans Are Also Saddened By Chi Chi DeVayne’s Passing

“I’m heartbroken… Chi Chi DeVayne was such a genuine, kind soul; a southern queen from Louisiana who brought a smile to everyone who got to see her perform. RIP queen. Your talent will be missed” wrote one fan on Twitter.

“Chi Chi DeVayne was one of the most important queens to come on RPDR. Through drag she escaped a cycle of toxic masculinity and violence. As the show became more about resources and flair, she showed that true drag is not about riches, but spirit. RIP Queen” wrote another fan.
