Comedy remains a male-dominated industry, and America’s Got Talent is no exception. Female comedians may be less common on the show, but that doesn’t mean they’re less funny.
A comedian has never won America’s Got Talent (without a puppet, that is). It’s about time a stand-up comic took home the $1 million prize, don’t you think? And if it ends up being a female comic who does it, even better. In the meantime, we rounded up some talented comediennes who got pretty close. Get ready to laugh.
Vicki made it to the Finals of Season 13 with her raunchy brand of comedy. After her audition, Howie Mandel told her that she filled the “void” left by the late Joan Rivers. Even Simon Cowell, who’s not usually a fan of stand-up, said she was the funniest person to ever appear on the show. Vicki later returned for America’s Got Talent: The Champions.
Angela competed in Season 8, and made it to the Semifinals with her hilarious impressions. It was especially entertaining when she imitated AGT judges Mel B and Heidi Klum, as well as former Voice coach Christina Aguilera.
This Season 4 comedienne made it to the Finals with her stand-up routine. She joked about her age, her small chest size, and her crush on Piers Morgan. David Hasselhoff said she got “funnier and funnier” with every appearance.
Lori Mae Hernandez
Lori Mae was only 13 years old when she auditioned for Season 11 of America’s Got Talent. She started writing jokes after her dad was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, to help him smile. Her audition got a standing ovation, and she made it to the Semifinals. Simon Cowell called her “the next Tina Fey.”
Melissa auditioned for Season 6 of AGT with spot-on impressions of Barbara Walters, Natalie Portman, Miley Cyrus, and more. Her funny act carried her to the Semifinals. Although she was eliminated, her career has since taken off. You might recognize her from a little show called Saturday Night Live.
Julia said she wanted to prove that age shouldn’t stop you from pursuing your talent. Her audition included a joke about her “fall foliage,” as well as an F-bomb. Afterward, she revealed to the judges that she’s transgender. Julia made it to the Quarterfinals of Season 11.
Wendy appeared on Season 9 of AGT. Although she was eliminated in the Quarterfinals, judge Howard Stern chose her as a wildcard, and she returned for the Semifinals. At the time, she had been doing stand-up comedy for more than 25 years, but good luck getting the truth about her age.
