Terry Crews Will Host ‘AGT: The Champions’
The America’s Got Talent family has a brand new member – actor Terry Crews is joining the fray for the show’s upcoming spin-off!
Earlier today it was announced that the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star would serve as host for America’s Got Talent: The Champions, which will feature acts who previously competed on various iterations of Got Talent from around the world.
Alongside the announcement, Terry released a statement expressing his excitement to be part of the AGT team.
“I am so proud and honored to join Simon, Mel, Heidi and Howie in hosting the #1 alternative series on television,” Crews said. “NBC’s ‘America’s Got Talent’ is a show I love to watch with my family and now to actually be a part of this special edition, ‘The Champions,’ is more than I could have asked or dreamed. Now America’s got Terry Crews!”
Terry’s statement seems to have revealed some previously-unconfirmed information about the new show. Other than Simon Cowell, it was unclear who the inhabitants of the seats at the judges’ table would be. But based on what Terry said it sounds like the lineup will remain the same as the past several seasons of regular AGT, with Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Mel B (who announced she was heading to rehab after the regular season wrapped, so maybe she’ll be going after this one?) rounding out the panel. (Hopefully we’ll get a break from the complaints about the panel having no Americans on it after Howard Stern left since the whole point of this new series is to feature global Got Talent acts.)
Terry is quite charismatic and fun, and I think those qualities plus the fact that he’s a fan of the show will make him a great fit for this role. Plus he does have some experience in the field under his belt, having hosted Who Wants To Be a Millionaire at one point (though live TV is a whole different ball-game from pre-taped fare!). I hope he’ll be able to help the contestants feel at ease and keep the judges in line when they go off the handle a bit. And I think having a brand new host will give the spin-off series a fresh feel, especially if the judging lineup really is going to remain identical to what we’ve been seeing on the main show for the past few years.
America’s Got Talent: The Champions is currently filming in Los Angeles and will air its seven episodes in January and February on NBC.
