This week on Songland, the Jonas Brothers released the biggest hit from the show yet! And on the Talent Recap Show, we discuss how “Greenlight” came to life. Plus, there’s a special visitor: last week’s winner, Darius Coleman! [Scroll down to see the FULL interview]
To start off, we recap the four songwriters on this week’s episode: Able Heart, Remmi, Ori, and Rynn. Then we discuss the winner in depth, Able Heart’s “Greenlight.” He wrote, mixed, and engineered the song by himself, which is so impressive! His song was a hit from the beginning but after working with Ester Dean and Ryan Tedder, it became just right for the Jonas Brothers.
Shortly after the episode aired, “Greenlight” rose to #2 on the iTunes charts! And it has remained in the top 10 ever since. But we also discuss how none of the songs have been translating to the radio yet. Will “Greenlight” be the first one to break that barrier? It hasn’t yet, but we are still hopeful with how it’s doing in digital sales.
We also discuss if we prefer weeks where there’s a clear front-runner or where there’s more competition between the songs. And here’s a spoiler: Kyle and Lauren don’t agree on this! Another issue we talk about is whether we prefer the original songwriters or the big name artists recording these songs.
Behind-the-Scenes Interview with Darius Coleman
Last week’s Songland winner Darius Coleman also joined Lauren Ashley Beck in the studio for an interview! He wrote “Better Luck Next Time” for Kelsea Ballerini. But when he submitted the song, he didn’t know who he was writing for. He knew that his song was being considered, but they hadn’t confirmed the talent when he submitted it. Even when he was picked, he still didn’t know who he was competing to write for! Then, when he found out it was Kelsea Ballerini, he was ecstatic to write for a country artist.
As far as how he got selected to work with Ryan Tedder? Darius said he mentioned how working with Ryan was on his vision board in the pre-interviews, which he thinks led to their partnership. He compliments how good Ryan’s instincts are and how they worked together very organically.
Darius also revealed that he has done background singing in the past leading up to the show. In fact, he had just confirmed a gig with John Legend when he got the call to be on Songland! Well, we all know how that worked out for him.
