Simon Cowell Urges Millionaire Celebrities To Use THEIR OWN Money To Pay Staff

Simon Cowell Money CoronavirusSamantha Agate | Talent Recap

Simon Cowell has an estimated net worth of $600 million so he is definitely not one of the people that is struggling financially during the coronavirus pandemic. Simon is worried though about those who have been laid off and cannot feed their families. He wants celebrities to use other resources to pay their staff instead of relying on taxpayer dollars that could be used to help millions of struggling people.

Simon Cowell Has Paid His Own Employees

Simon took matters into his own hands to pay 50 full-time staff members who work at his production company, Syco, in London and Los Angeles. Production has ended on his TV shows in both the UK and US but that does not mean his staff will be placed on furlough. A furlough is a temporary leave of absence for employees due to certain economic conditions. It is a method that is used by companies to cut costs. More than nine million people are expected to be furloughed during the coronavirus pandemic. But luckily for Simon’s Syco crew, they will not be a part of that number.

However, Simon recognizes that a lot of other celebrity employers may not be treating their staff the same way. They are relying on taxpayer money to pay their staff while they are out of jobs. Simon made it clear that he does not think this is the right move when he spoke to The Sun. “I don’t like celebrities telling people what to do, and I know this is a hugely difficult time for so many – worries about family, health, jobs, paying the mortgage and feeding their family are at the forefront of people’s minds,” he said. “But there are still other people in business and in entertainment with resources available, so today it’s those people I’m urging to rise to this enormous challenge.”

Simon Called Out Victoria Beckham And Richard Branson For Using Taxpayer Dollars

Simon was not shy about which celebrities should use their own funds to pay employees. Earlier this week, former Spice Girl Victoria was under scrutiny after she furloughed 25 members of her staff. She now relies on government funds to pay 80% of her staff’s wages. People particularly had an issue with this because Victoria and her husband David are literally millionaires. They have an estimated combined net worth of about $900 million. This is plenty of money to pay her staff on her own. The Beckham’s do not have to worry about when their next meal or paycheck will come. But other people do, and Simon is trying to help these struggling people out.

Taxpayer dollars are essential in funding coronavirus relief efforts. Simon’s whole point is that taxpayer dollars should be used to help people get meals or programs that can help them. He thinks that if celebrities are capable to use their own money to pay people and prevent them from struggling, this would be one big step for the economy and the world during this time. Former America’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan took to Twitter to express his distaste for Victoria’s method of paying her employees.

This also applies to billionaire Richard Branson who asked for over $500 million taxpayer dollars for his company Virgin Atlantic. Millionaire actor Duncan Bannatyne called out Richard on Twitter. He said he should go to the bank to pay his employees instead. People even started a petition for Richard to use his own assets instead of government funds to pay his employees.

Simon Expects More Stars To Step Up And Use Their Own Assets To Help Others

Simon has also donated $1 million to charities Feeding Britain and Feeding America. These charities feed millions of people each year. They are providing meals for those who cannot afford them during this time. He also pledged over $500,000 to Shooting Star Hospices, a charity that supports children suffering from genetic diseases. He hopes that more celebrities will take a different approach to pay their employees and helping out those in need. One Twitter user praised both Simon and Duncan for doing the right thing. He said “much respect for you both for not using the public purse for your companies and using your own money as well as the banks instead of relying on the public to bail you out, RESPECT.”

Simon using his platform to help other people out during this crucial time is very admirable.

Hopefully, more celebrities will be encouraged by Simon to pay their employees with their own funds instead of dipping into the money that can be used for more coronavirus relief programs.
