Young singer Ashley Marina had a stressful audition experience on America’s Got Talent this week, as judge Simon Cowell had her sing three different songs before she was voted through.
Simon is known for stopping singers in the middle of a performance and asking them to sing another song or do things differently. He famously did this twice to AGT contestant Ansley Burns in Season 14.
Simon Cowell Makes Ashley Marina Sing Three Times On ‘AGT’
Ashley Marina started her audition singing “Anyway” by Martina McBride. During the performance, Simon held up his hand, and the music stopped. He told her the backing track was “overbearing” and asked her to sing another song a cappella.
Ashley did just that, with “Opportunity” by Sia. Simon stopped her again, saying she chose the wrong songs. The audience booed him, as fellow judge Sofia Vergara suggested they give her some time to choose another song.
Simon agreed, and the asked Ashley to come back later in the day. He suggested she try singing a song by a male artist and making it her own, because what she had been doing sounded like “karaoke.”
Ashley went backstage and tried out a few songs by male singers, but they didn’t work for her. Ultimately, Ashley returned to the stage and performed a song she wrote herself, called “You’ll Always Be My Hero.”
Ashley Sings A Song For Her Father
“It’s about my dad,” Ashley Marina said when Simon asked what her original song was about. “It’s about how he’s always been there for me.”
The audience and judges gave Ashley a standing ovation for her performance. They were all moved by her song, and brought Ashley’s father out to share in the emotional moment.
Ashley received three “yes” votes from the judges. (At that point in the show, Heidi Klum had left the set due to illness, so there were only three judges at the table.) She’ll return for the next round of competition, and we can’t wait to hear what she has up her sleeve.
