Simon Cowell Calls This ‘X Factor’ Audition The Best He’s Ever Seen [VIDEO]
Simon Cowell has watched a lot of singing auditions, on The X Factor and beyond, so it’s pretty impressive when he calls one of them the best he’s ever seen. That’s what happened when Danyl Johnson auditioned in 2009.
The 27-year-old teacher wowed the X Factor UK audience and judges with his rendition of “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Not only was his voice great, but he showed off an amazing stage presence.
Danyl Johnson Auditions For ‘X Factor’
Danyl explained that he loved teaching, but that his passion is for music. He shared how nervous he was to audition for the show. Simon Cowell also seemed to be in a bad mood after previous auditions, so no one was sure how he’d react.
The audience went wild for Danyl’s performance, and he even made the judges smile with his personality. At one point, he tossed the microphone between his hands in time with the music, and sat down on the edge of the stage.

The X Factor judges gave Danyl a standing ovation after his performance. Dannii Minogue called it the “perfect audition.” Louis Walsh told Danyl that his students would be proud of him. Cheryl called him a “natural born performer,” saying she’d take him in her category.
“I’ve been doing this for, what, how many years?” Simon said after Danyl’s performance. “Eight, nine years? Okay, Danyl. That was, singlehandedly, the best first audition I have ever heard.”
How Far Did Danyl Get In The Competition?
Danyl received four “yes” votes from the judges to move forward. He made it all the way to the semifinals and finished in fourth place. In 2017, Danyl was in the running to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest, but lost to fellow X Factor contestant Lucie Jones.

After a later performance on the show in which Danyl changed a song’s lyrics to reference a woman instead of a man, X Factor judge Dannii Minogue caused some controversy by referring to an interview in which Danyl said he dates men.
More recently, Danyl reflected on the incident, and he doesn’t have any hard feelings against Dannii. He referred to himself as a “gay man,” and said he accepted Dannii’s apology after the fact.
These days, Danyl hosts a podcast called Best Thing, which is also the title of a single he released earlier this year. You can follow him on Instagram to keep up with what he’s doing now.
