Simon Cowell, the Svengali behind half the shows we cover, said in passing on Sunday’s show that this season of The X Factor UK will end in three weeks. That’s hella early for the finale. Normally it’s closer to Christmas. I can’t help but wonder if this has to do with the show’s horrible ratings. Could this be the beginning of the end for the venerable show?
It all happened after fan favorite Dalton Harris. As we said in our recap, Dalton is probably going to be one of the final two if not the winner. Simon seems to agree with that assessment. After Dalton’s performance Simon said,
“I have a feeling we’ll be seeing you in three weeks for the final.”
Let’s put aside for a second that it is a Simon prediction. What struck a lot of fans is how quickly the final will be upon us. One of the reasons that the end of the show is closer to Christmas is that the winner usually releases a song to compete for the Christmas #1 song. As we learned from the movie Love, Actually, this is a big deal in England. I can’t help but wonder if this truncated season is due to the fact that The X Factor UK’s ratings have been in the toilet. As we all know, the show has seen a steady decline in their ratings over the last few years. That’s why Simon tried to shake things up by changing the panel and adding the Golden X. It hasn’t worked. Last week the show had its lowest ratings in the history of the show. We are seriously afraid that ITV is going to pull the plug on the venerable show.
Look, The X Factor is not a cheap show by any standard. They pay the judges a ton of money and the live shows have really high production values. It has to be worth it for the network to keep the show on the air. Respect for what it achieved in the past will only get them by for so long. If I were Simon, I’d be nervous.
