In 2014, one BGT act proved you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The dance duo Paddy & Nicko received Simon Cowell’s red buzzer, but they quickly proved him wrong.
When dancer Paddy Jones told the judges she was almost 80 years old, they looked a bit skeptical about what she and her younger partner, Nicolás Espinosa, were about to do. But the pair showed off an incredible routine that ended up earning the Golden Buzzer.
Paddy & Nicko Audition For ‘BGT’
Paddy and Nicko’s salsa dance routine started off a little slow, as the audience and judges appeared bored. Simon Cowell was so unimpressed with their tame moves, he actually hit the red buzzer for them.
The pair threw him a glare before launching into a fast-paced, acrobatic routine in which Nicko swung Paddy around and lifted her up into the air. Everyone watching looked completely shocked by this turn of events.
Amanda Holden was so impressed with their performance, she immediately hit the Golden Buzzer to send them straight into the live shows. Afterward, Simon apologized to the pair, saying he buzzed “a little early.” He called the audition “extraordinary.”
How Far Did Paddy & Nicko Go?
David Walliams called Paddy an example to older people that you can still be “amazing.” That’s when Paddy explained that she stopped dancing to start a family, and picked it back up again when her husband passed away.
Paddy and Nicko made it to the finals of BGT in 2014, coming in ninth place. They later competed on Germany’s Got Talent, coming in ninth place once again. Then in 2019, they returned to the BGT stage for Champions, earning the Golden Buzzer from David Walliams.
Earlier this year, Paddy and Nicko competed on America’s Got Talent: The Champions. However, they didn’t make it past the preliminaries. Now 86, Paddy holds a Guinness World Record for oldest female acrobatic salsa dancer.
