Seventeen-year-old Makayla Phillips auditioned for American Idol earlier this year. If you watched her on the show, you might have thought she looked familiar. That’s because it’s not her first time performing on a talent show.
When Makayla was 15, she auditioned for America’s Got Talent. Not only did she get through to the next round, but she also earned the Golden Buzzer from judge Heidi Klum. Check out Makayla’s American Idol debut below.
Makayla Phillips Auditions For ‘American Idol’
Makayla revealed that she had first auditioned for American Idol in 2017, but she was two weeks too young to get on the show. She added that she’s dreamt of being on the show since she was a little girl.
“I used to have Barbie dolls, and I would pretend one was Ryan Seacrest and one was me,” she recalled. She added that she had been working “non-stop” to prepare for her audition, singing until 4 in the morning.
For her American Idol audition, Makayla sang “Who’s Lovin’ You” by the Jackson 5. Katy Perry said she gave her goosebumps, predicting that Makayla would be in the Top 10. That’s pretty much what happened. Makayla finished Season 18 in the Top 11, but was unfortunately eliminated before she could be in the Top 7.
Remember Makayla From ‘AGT’ Season 13?
Although she didn’t mention it in her American Idol audition, Makayla previously appeared on AGT Season 13. She performed “Warrior” by Demi Lovato. Judge Heidi Klum was especially impressed by the performance, and chose to hit the Golden Buzzer.
Makayla went straight to the live shows. In the quarterfinals, she performed “Issues” by Julia Michaels. After singing “Who U Are” by Jessie J in the semifinals, Makayla was unfortunately eliminated from the show.
