She Was 14 When Her Mother Was Murdered — WATCH Ashly’s Emotional Tribute
In 2013, singer Ashly Williams blew the judges away with her cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” on The X Factor USA. The moment was made even more emotional by the reveal of Ashly’s tragic past.
Watch the emotional audition in the video below, and read on to find out what the judges had to say about Ashly’s powerhouse performance.
Ashly Williams Auditions For ‘X Factor’
Before her audition, Ashly said she was singing for her late mother. “This is the reason why I’m here,” the 24-year-old said, adding that her mother would be “proud” to see her trying out for The X Factor.
Ashly revealed that she was 14 years old when her mother was murdered. “It’s something that you never get over,” she said, “because you want your mom here cheering you on for those moments that mean so much to you.”
The crowd cheered for Ashly as she performed the song. She had tears in her eyes as she continued to sing. The performance made judge Demi Lovato cry, and Ashly received a standing ovation afterward.
What Did The Judges Think Of Ashly’s Performance?
Ashly thanked the crowd for their response to her performance, prompting judge Kelly Rowland to tell her, “Thank you, baby girl, for spilling your heart out in that vocal.” Fellow judge Paulina Rubio said she was “captivated by your talent.”
Demi said she was “speechless,” adding that she had “chills all over my arms and legs.” Simon Cowell, meanwhile, said Ashly’s audition was “why we brought this show to America.” He added that she was “seriously, seriously good.”
Although Ashly didn’t win The X Factor, she went on to appear on Kelly Rowland’s Chasing Destiny series, and became part of the group June’s Diary. The group is active on YouTube, and just last week they posted a cover of “Zero to Hero” from Hercules for Halloween.
