Did The Latest The Sacred Riana ‘AGT’ Performance End As Planned?
The act everyone seems to be talking about after last night’s America’s Got Talent quarter-final episode is The Sacred Riana. Whether or not her latest performance scared you, there was one question on everyone’s minds: did the act end the way it was supposed to?
The first part of Riana’s act involved her messing around with the panel at the judges’ table, warning Mel B someone was “coming for [her]”. This eventually led to eight “clones” of the horror magician coming out from behind the table and chasing her back onstage and up a wall. Just as one of them was seemingly about to grab her, a scream was heard, the lights went out, and the next thing we saw was a commercial.
Everyone was confused. Would the act finish up after the ad break? Was the cut a technical glitch that prevented us from seeing the end of the performance? It seemed to be the latter when the show came back and went straight to the judges’ comments as if nothing had gone wrong.
A lot of viewers felt ripped off by not getting to see the end of the act, and many were upset on behalf of Riana, fearing that the entire act not airing on television would hurt her chances of moving forward in the competition. But when the act was uploaded to YouTube shortly after it aired on TV…the ending was exactly the same as we saw during the episode.
It turns out that cut to the commercial break was planned from the get-go. According to documents from the show’s crew that were leaked online (and have since been taken down) the abrupt ending to Riana’s performance was 100% intentional.
It’s unclear as to whether this was a creative choice many viewers simply didn’t understand or a strategic decision to get people talking. (Maybe both?) Whichever it was, it certainly generated buzz for Riana. Many fans unaware that the cut wasn’t a glitch have expressed sympathy and support for her, and are voting to keep her around because of that. On top of this, her act is currently the most viewed of the 12 from last night, with well over one million hits on both YouTube and Facebook.
While Riana continues to be a pretty devisive act among fans, being the talk of the town on a night with not many memorable acts will probably be a good thing for her when we get to the results this evening.
America’s Got Talent is back tonight at 8/7c on NBC.
