Ricki Lake Reveals The Reason For Her Short Hair In An Emotional Post
Actress and former talk show host Ricki Lake says she feels “liberated and free” as she debuts a new buzzcut on social media. Ricki — who has appeared on DWTS, The Masked Singer and X Factor: Celebrity — shared the reason for the new look in an emotional post.
Ricki made it clear that she is “not sick,” but she has been suffering from hair loss for almost 30 years. Read on to find out what caused this, and why she’s choosing to open up about it now.
Ricki Lake Reveals Hair Loss Struggle
Ricki posted a set of photos (by her friend Amanda Demme) showing off her short hairstyle on Instagram, along with a message about her experience, which she shared in full on Facebook. She says her hair loss has been “debilitating, embarrassing, painful, scary, depressing, lonely, all the things,” and that she was even suicidal over it.
The actress says the problem started when she appeared in the movie Hairspray in 1988. She says the production “triple-processed and teased my then healthy virgin hair every 2 weeks during filming,” and it was “never the same.”
She also believes other factors contributed, including “yo-yo dieting, hormonal birth control, radical weight fluctuations over the years, my pregnancies, genetics, stress, and hair dyes and extensions.”
Ricki has tried various kinds of extensions, as well as wigs, and a “unique solution” that worked for her for the past several years. “It all felt fake and I was super self-conscious and uncomfortable,” she shared. Finally, she chose to just buzz her hair off and embrace it.
Why Ricki Chose To Share Her Hair Loss Story
Ricki revealed why she chose to be more open about her experience. In addition to setting herself “free” for the new year and decade, she hopes that sharing her story will help others with similar issues.
“I know that by sharing my truth, I will be striking a chord with so so many women and men. I am not alone in this and my goal is to help others while at the same time unshackle myself from this quiet hell I have been living in.”
She added that she will occasionally wear fake hair going forward, but this time, she’ll be doing it “for fun, not because I am hiding anything.”
Ricki appeared on GMA to talk about her experience, and said the response has been great. “This was personal. I’m overwhelmed by the reaction,” she said. “I was really scared people were going to say mean things.” She added of her new style, “I don’t think I look that bad!”
