Priyanka Chopra’s new memoir Unfinished delves deep into her facing bullying as a 15-year-old high schooler in America. The actress ultimately decided to finish high school in India after facing this racist and cruel behavior. An excerpt from her book was shared with People Magazine depicting this dark period in her life.

Priyanka Chopra Was Bullied When She Attended American High School

Priyanka first moved to the United States when she was 12 years old and stayed with relatives. The Quantico star bounced around from New York City, Indianapolis and Massachusetts where bullying was taken to a new level. In her book, Priyanka discusses all of the slurs and rude comments her classmates made to her. “Brownie, go back to your country!” the bullies shouted at her as she walked down the hallway. “Go back on the elephant you came on.”

Priyanka tried to ignore all of the bullies and seek help from a guidance counselor. However, even though she reached out for help, nothing put an end to the bullying. “I don’t even blame the city, honestly. I just think it was girls who, at that age, just want to say something that’ll hurt,” Priyanka explained. “Now, at the other side of 35, I can say that it probably comes from a place of them being insecure. But at that time, I took it very personally.” The 38-year-old then went on to describe how she “broke up with America” and returned back home to India.

“I was so blessed that when I went back to India, I was surrounded by so much love and admiration for who I was,” she continued. “Going back to India healed me after that experience in high school.” She found a love for the stage and eventually became one of the world’s biggest Bollywood stars. She made her way to American television in 2015 and has since been landing roles left and right.

Priyanka Found Light In The Darkness With Her Husband

Priyanka wants people to take away a major lesson from her book. “Insecurity becomes small as soon as you talk about it with someone you trust: A therapist, a counselor,” she said. “I feel like a lot of people spend their time when they’re feeling dark [in isolation]. That’s the worst thing to do, is to feel sad alone.”

“We have the choice, most of the time, to step out of the darkness ourselves” she continued. “The best way I’ve found of doing it is talking to people who care.” Priyanka found love with Jonas Brothers star Nick Jonas who will be returning to Season 20 of The Voice.
