Phenomenal ‘BGT’ Singer Passed Away A Year After Making The Final

In 2010, a singer named Janey Cutler auditioned for BGT. She impressed the judges, and ended up making it to the final, but sadly passed away the next year at age 82.

Janey Cutler Auditions For ‘BGT’

For her BGT audition, Janey performed an English version of Edith Piaf’s “Non Je Regrette Rein.” Host Ant McPartlin escorted the then-80-year-old onto the stage so she could find her mark. When asked by Simon Cowell why she chose to audition, she said, “I like singing.”

The audience stood up and cheered her on as she sang, showing off a powerhouse voice. “Janey, where have you been?” judge Piers Morgan said. Amanda Holden said she never expected Janey “to have a set of lungs” like that.

Janey said she was “thankful” to be on the show. She received three “yes” votes from the judges. Janey made it to the final, where she once again performed “No Regrets.” She finished the competition in ninth place.

Janey’s Family Pays Tribute To Her After Her Death

Janey passed away in her sleep in August 2011, at age 82. Her son Drew said her death was unexpected, as she had been “happy and healthy.” He explained, “Recently, she had suffered a virus and had been under the weather. But in the past few days, she had been feeling better and back to her old self.”

After competing on the show, Janey toured with her fellow BGT contestants. She also recorded an album with a group of Chelsea pensioners in November 2010, singing “Men in Scarlet” with Katherine Jenkins and Dame Vera Lynn.

Janey chose to forgo fame in order to spend more time with her family. “She didn’t want to be famous, she just wanted to sing,” her son said. “She loved life and just like she used to sing – she had no regrets.”

The singer was survived by her seven children, 13 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
