Robbie Williams has become a fan favorite in his short time as a judge on The X Factor UK. He’s knowledgable, bringing his 20 years as a pop icon to bare on his advice. Plus he’s funny and energetic. For anyone that doubted that he would make a good judge, they are now convinced. But Robbie has some commitments this weekend so music legend Nile Rodgers is stepping into his seat. Well, not stepping. You know what I mean.
I LOVE Nile Rodgers. He started out as the lead guitarist and songwriter for Chic back in the 70’s and developed that famous funky guitar technique that defined disco soul and what came after. For you young folks, he helped create the sound for Daft Punk’s smash hit Get Lucky. Without Nile Rodgers that song wouldn’t be nearly as good. He was on an episode of The X Factor earlier in the season during the judge’s houses round. Rodgers also made an appearance last season on American Idol. The guy is everywhere! In addition to being a great songwriter and musician, he’s also one of the best producers in music. He’s literally worked with everybody. From the aforementioned Daft Punk to David Bowie. He’s a good choice to replace Robbie for a couple of days. Who better to give advice?
He also doesn’t seem to suffer fools. If you aren’t bringing your A-game, Nile is going to tell you so. When you’ve been in the music business as long as Rodgers has you know when something works and when it doesn’t. It may be painful to hear, but he’s not really doing the contestants any favors if he pulls his punches. I’m sure all of his criticism will be constructive.
