Night One Of The American Idol Finale Was Epic
Last night was the performance show of the American Idol finale. Though the show got off to a rocky start, I really think that it is ending on a high note, (no pun intended). The interesting thing, at least with the first round of songs is that the judges were harsher than they’ve ever been all season. It’s a little too late, guys. I will say that by the end of the evening I started to question whether Mel and I were right about Gabby Barrett.
Caleb Lee Hutchinson
Who doesn’t love Caleb? With that winning smile and nice Southern boy charm it’s hard to resist his charms. The nerves were running high in all three singers tonight and it’s no surprise. They are very young and inexperienced. I couldn’t help but feel like Caleb may not be ready for the pressures of a musical career. He started off with an OK rendition of Don’t Close Your Eyes and Johnny Cash Heart. He came back at the end with a great version of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues. Will he win? I doubt it, but you never know.
OK, so Mel and I have been saying for weeks we think Gabby is going to win. She just has American Idol written all over her and it is clear that she’s who the producers are rooting for. But her performances tonight were not her best. I hate to say that because she’s a real talent, but it’s true. In fact, I wonder if she lost so much momentum that she is not going to win. She sang Little Red Wagon…again, Rivers Deep, and Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing. Steve Perry, Journey’s ex-lead singer, even came out to congratulate her. But, like I said, I wonder if she choked on the last night.
I kind of feel that Maddie should win. There is no doubt that she gave the best performances of the night. Though she was clearly nervous at the beginning, she relaxed at the end when she killed Fleetwood Mac’s Landslide...the perfect song for her. She also sang an original called Going Going Gone and Don’t Ever Let Your Children Grow Up. It’s going to be a nail biter as to who is going to win.
Harper Grace, Jonny Brenns, Michelle Sussett, and Catie Turner.
We got one last glimpse of these fan favorites singing original songs. They were great, so much so that you wonder why they were eliminated. Especially Catie. We love Catie.
