Season 5 of The Masked Singer has been full of big reveals, hilarious judge guesses, and fun performances. One thing that has been missing though is host Nick Cannon who missed out on tapings due to his COVID-19 diagnosis. Thankfully, the producers knew just how to give Cannon the most epic comeback ever.
Everybody was shocked when guest host Niecy Nash announced that there was a third wildcard entering the competition during last night’s episode. When The Bulldog hit the stage, it was so hard to tell who was under the mask. After his performance of “Candy Girl” by New Edition, Niecy decided to eliminate The Bulldog from the competition.
When it came time for the big reveal, Cannon turned out to be the star under the mask. This marked his first Season 5 appearance and served as his return to the show. He will continue on for the remainder of the season.
“Niecy has been doing an amazing job until tonight,” Cannon said after the show. “She chose completely wrong. She kicked me off the show.”
“Honestly I have a whole new respect for all of our masked crusaders being on the other side of it, wow is all I can say,” he added.
“First of all, the contestants have no control of anything,” he said. “I feel their pain. I know what they’re going through.”
Cannon tried to disguise his voice during the performance so he picked a song that was in a “super high register.” He dedicated his performance to Nash right before she kicked him off the show.
“I thought ok, I’m going to butter up the host and call her my ‘candy girl’ and try to perform for her,” he said.
Clearly, flattery doesn’t get you anywhere on The Masked Singer. But don’t worry, Cannon is known for being a jokester and is still very good friends with Nash.
In a backstage interview, Cannon continuously reiterated that he was the wildcard, so it was blasphemous that he was kicked off the show.
“Right before the song started, I felt my heart beating fast,” he confessed.
The 40-year-old was legitimately nervous before the big reveal just because it took so much preparation to conceal his identity. He really did not want any of the judges to guess that it was him under the mask. We definitely have to applaud his ability to keep a big secret like this.
“The nervousness is a feeling I’ve never felt on this set before,” he added.
Cannon also spoke about how it was always part of an ongoing discussion to have him do something on the show. He spoke with vocal coaches and producers and he assumed that he would do something big in the fifth season. The former ‘AGT’ host spoke this into existence because it finally happened.
Cannon’s elimination from The Masked Singer was all in good fun. The producers were so clever in planning his big return in this epic twist.
