‘The Masked Singer’ Returns With a Two Hour Episode and TWO Unmaskings!
After a two-week, forced hiatus for the World Series or whatever, The Masked Singer is BACK! So we’re on to the important things again. And to make up for lost time, we have a two hour episode with ELEVEN performances.
Let’s get into what happened in tonight’s exciting two hour episode with TWO unmaskings!
Who is the Rottweiler?
Clues: In the Rottweiler’s clues, he said he’s “been judged from the moment he entered the game.” The judges giving him good feedback showed him he could succeed on his own and he said, “I want it that way.” A trophy was shown and a 1st place ribbon. He knew early on he was meant to be a star, and we see him drawing himself as an angel. Rottweiler says it all started with musical theatre and makeup. His heroes growing up were Bruce Lee and Boyz II Men.
Performance: The Rottweiler kicked off the night, singing “Love Runs Out” by OneRepublic. He’s got a lot of confidence and the voice to back it up. OneRepublic has a big range and complex runs, which he executed perfectly. So this HAS to be a singer.
Guesses: Brian Littrell, Kevin Jonas, Patrick Monahan (from Train)
Who is the Ladybug?
Clues: The Ladybug talks about how the nerves hit her in the first performance, but the experience means a lot to her. She says growing up, “everything on the outside looked rosy but in reality…my world was completely upside-down.” There is a tarot card with the 3 of Cups and trophy that says “BEST HOST.” She says she gets to reconnect with the “pieces of me” as a cross is shown. When asked for one more clue, she said the “queens of the world” taught her how to be a lady.
Performance: Performing “Juice” by Lizzo, the Ladybug brought it on the stage. She definitely isn’t a rapper, but she has the singing chops to pull off the chorus here. And “Juice” is one of the catchiest songs ever. No complaints here. (But also can I start a formal petition to get Lizzo on The Masked Singer next season?)
Guesses: Paris Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, Ashlee Simpson
Who is the Tree?
Clues: Starting off her clues package, the Tree talked about how she’s “not a regular tree, she’s a cool tree.” She is seen playing piano. The Tree says her “dad was a tinsel” and her “mom’s a pom pom.” Growing up, her parents told her to be true to herself and that she’s their favorite elf. The White House is seen in the shot. She makes another reference to food, this time talking about fruitcake being “Yummo!” Her one last clue was that she’s been a brand ambassador and it does have to do with food.
Performance: This was quite the song choice. Tree came onto stage singing the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. And she actually did it justice! Her high notes were crazy and spot on. After her first performance of “High Hopes,” I definitely did not expect this to be as good as it was.
Guesses: Amy Sedaris, Zooey Deschanel, Rachael Ray, Padma Lakshmi
Who is the Penguin?
Clues: The Penguin says she’s been counted out before. She was “always relegated to the D list.” A Post-it is shown saying “SNAGGLETOOTH.” The Penguin stood up and took control, making people laugh. She mentions being in the office or on the stage. Some beauty/hair projects are shown, then a cross. The Penguin says she’s “been in many relationships with many of the presidents.”
Performance: Returning to the stage, Penguin sang Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” It definitely showed off her strength, which is sass and personality…and not her vocals. She owned the stage and “shook her tail feather.”
Guesses: Sherri Shepherd, Nicole Byer, Star Jones, Wanda Sykes, Mindy Kaling
Who is the Flower?
Clues: The Flower started by saying, “You think I’m a professional singer, but I’ve never taken a voice lesson in my life.” A clock showing “12:00” and a door with “524” on it is shown, as well as her in a bathtub. She mentions that she has an “X factor.” French flags are seen throughout, then the Flower shows a ring priced at $13, saying you “can’t put a price tag on what you love.” The Flower says her favorite band is Kings of Leon.
Performance: Singing “Cheap Thrills” by Sia, the Flower branched out (see what I did there?) by singing something out of her wheelhouse. But she clearly has a lot of vocal talent. That high notes was in the stratosphere too! This Flower can keep up with the best of ’em because Sia is not easy to cover.
Guesses: Bjork, Shirley Bassey, Anita Baker, Jennifer Hudson
Who is the Fox?
Clues: The Fox tells a story to his “little fox” again. He didn’t always fit in and grew up “in a rough patch of the woods.” He exclaims “Shazam!” and goes on to say he transformed into an undercover super fox. The Fox is seen holding an Emmy Award in a drawing, and says never felt like the applause was for the REAL him until now. When asked for one more clue, the Fox said that growing up, he “imagined he would be in a uniform.”
Performance: Before we get into the Fox’s performance, I love all the Panic! At the Disco love on The Masked Singer this season! The Fox covered “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” this time around and it was epic. There was even a dance break in the middle? Gotta love it! And that is one talented fox. He knows what he’s doing!
Guesses: AJ McLean (from the Backstreet Boys), Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo
The First Celebrity Unmasked!
After all the performances, the votes were in! The first singer to be eliminated tonight is the Penguin. The judges put in their final guesses and the celebrity was unmasked…
That’s right, the Penguin was none other than actress and comedian, Sherri Shepherd. And Nick Cannon said he knew it was her! But that wasn’t all for tonight. Since it’s a special two hour episode, we’ve got another FIVE performances plus a celebrity unmasking to go. And Anthony Anderson joins the judging panel!
Who is the Black Widow?
Clues: To start the second half of the episode, the Black Widow said this “feels like home,” but she can make herself at home in any nook or cranny. She gives tips for jazzing up a place, mentioning a den in Memphis and a bungalow in Bel Air. She says always find time to entertain your guests, while sashes saying “MISDEMEANOR” and “SCRUB” are displayed. After the performance, the Black Widow brought out a “revealing item,” which was whipped cream and crackers.
Performance: Covering “Believe” by Cher, the Black Widow sang it well and put her twist on it. And her crouch game, as Ken mentioned, is second to none. Even with a broken arm, the Black Widow can really own the stage.
Guesses: Raven-Symone, Miranda Lambert, Drew Barrymore
Who is Thingamajig?
Clues: Thingamajig talks about how he’s “used to his voice winning over the ladies.” He’s seen eating gummy worms and bow ties and someone dips a shoe in sauce, saying “this is how we do it.” His “pops” taught him how to serenade the ladies. He ends the package in a Conga line! Once the judges guessed, Thingamajig revealed a Sign Language Dictionary.
Performance: This time around, Thingamajig sang “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” and WOW, he can SANG. This isn’t news but every time he performs, it’s dynamic. His tone is beautiful, he knows how to command the stage, and his showmance with Nicole is hilarious. In my opinion, this is his to lose.
Guesses: Montell Jordan, Tony Parker, Dennis Rodman, Ronnie DeVoe
Who is the Butterfly?
Clues: The Butterfly has “reignited a love she’s had since she was 7” on the show. She talks about being part of a choir while a gospel choir member is on the screen. Then, we see a nurse’s cap, a certificate of achievement for “Care Salesman of the Year,” and a Brit Award. Being on The Masked Singer, she is reclaiming what she thought she lost. The Butterfly’s last clue was a forensics kit. She said she “once had the chance to choose life or death.”
Performance: Performing “Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones, the Butterfly showed off her more tender side this week. Her voice was smooth and soulful. She proved that she doesn’t have to blast crazy high notes to impress the audience and judges, who all commended her performance.
Guesses: Michelle Williams, Leona Lewis, Norah Jones
Who is the Leopard?
Clues: The Leopard says he feels like he has “nothing to lose.” He talks about being a young cub on the road, jamming with his “pack of misfits.” Newspapers are seen saying “Star Strikes a POSE…” and “Performer of SLOW JAMZ Plays at the White House.” A violin case asking for tips is displayed on the screen after. He says he’s a “fresh new edition” of the old him. His revealing item was cameras, saying that though he’s often in front of the camera, he prefers to be behind the lens.
Performance: In a shift from his former performances, the Leopard sang “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry. The stage was decorated like The Lion King? But the Leopard sounded great on the song. And watching Robin Thicke dance like a cat was…interesting too. Those backup dancers were the stars of the show though.
Guesses: Bobby Brown, Billy Porter, Tyler Perry
Who is the Flamingo?
Clues: The Flamingo says “mira” and explains that her story is not all fantasy. She started hating the sound of her own voice years ago, but now she’s learning how to say thank you. She danced, sung, and acted her way to the top. The Flamingo is seen doing ballet. Her last clue was an NAACP Award, which she said she’s won before.
Performance: To end the night, the Flamingo sang “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman. She wanted to strip away all the dancing and theatrics to focus on her voice. And this song did just that. She was straight up impressive! I love that even without the big show, the Flamingo still managed to get a standing ovation.
Guesses: Fantasia, Adrienne Bailon, P!nk
The Second Celebrity Unmasked!
For the second unmasking of the night, the audience and judges picked…the Black Widow! After final guesses, she was revealed…
The Black Widow is Raven-Symone! That means Nicole Scherzinger and Robin Thicke got it right.
