Mariah Carey Talks About Ellen DeGeneres Forcing Her To Confirm Pregnancy On Air And The Aftermath

In 2008, Ellen DeGeneres invited singer Mariah Carey onto The Ellen Show. She tried to get the singer to admit that she was pregnant on-air and clear up the speculation. The tense moment has recently resurfaced online. Mariah finally speaking out amid The Ellen Show investigation for a toxic work environment.
Mariah Carey Speaks Out About Experience With Ellen DeGeneres
In the interview, Ellen offered Mariah champagne “to toast to not being pregnant.” If Mariah refused to drink the champagne, it would seemingly confirm her pregnancy that so many people were speculating at this time. Mariah was visibly annoyed by Ellen’s aggressiveness and did not want to take a sip. It seemed like Ellen was harping on the subject until Mariah took a fake sip. Ellen still had her suspicions that Mariah was pregnant but you could feel the tension between both former American Idol judges. Shortly after her appearance on The Ellen Show, Mariah revealed she had a miscarriage. In a recent interview with Vulture, Mariah spoke about this experience with Ellen. “I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath” she said.

“I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had a miscarriage. I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.” She continued on to say that there “is empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented. But what am I supposed to do?” she added, “It’s like, [sings] ‘What are you going to do?” In 2011, Mariah welcomed twins Monroe and Moroccan with then-husband, Nick Cannon. She also went on to appear on The Ellen Show several times after the 2008 experience but people never forgot how uncomfortable and awkward it truly was.
People Are Not Happy About Ellen’s Past Behavior
This is just one of the many clips of Ellen that have resurfaced recently where people are questioning her intentions. “Mariah wouldn’t have been forced to announce the miscarriage if it wasn’t for Ellen’s cheap stunt. Having to announce such a personal trauma public must have been horrible. Ellen might not have caused the miscarriage, but she definitely contributed to Mariah’s trauma in a big way” said one Twitter user.
“The amount of times Mariah said ‘No’ why did Ellen not understand. Don’t force people to drink with you when they don’t feel like it” said another. “So much of Ellen’s interviews were deplorable acts of selfishness, narcissism and ignorance masquerading as ‘lighthearted fun.’ I’m glad Mariah Carey has directly addressed that pregnancy moment and stated that it was incredibly uncomfortable” said another.
Earlier this month, Ellen sent a memo to her staffers after they had complained that they faced intimidation and racism behind the scenes of the show. “On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness — no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect,” the memo said. “As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t. That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.”
