Mariah Carey is a five-time Grammy Award-winning, best-selling music artist that has millions of dedicated fans all over the world. That’s why when judge Ken Jeong guessed that Mariah was Lips on The Masked Singer, fans saw it as a major diss.
Ken Jeong Guessed Lips Was Mariah Carey On ‘The Masked Singer’
Lips, who was ultimately revealed later in the show to be talk show host Wendy Williams sang Odyssey’s “Native New Yorker.” To be truthful, from the first note of the song, it was pretty obvious that Wendy was under the mask. She also fumbled the words of the song and began laughing midway through the performance.
Check out the recap show below where hosts Mel and Kyle discuss everything that happened in last week’s episode including the reveal of Lips. They also reveal the identity of The Whatchamacallit, and spoiler alert, it’s definitely not who you think!
When it came time for the judges to write down their first impression guesses before Lips’ reveal, Ken outlandishly wrote that he thought it was Mariah under the mask. Mariah’s ex-husband Nick Cannon who hosts the show was also completely shocked by Ken’s guess. Nick and Mariah had a very public divorce after eight years of marriage and welcoming twins together. It was majorly awkward, but Nick was able to laugh it off. Mariah’s fans were not so forgiving though and took to social media to express their distaste for Ken’s guess.
“How dare Ken disrespect the legend that is Mariah Carey #TheMaskedSinger” wrote one Mariah fan on Twitter.
“I love Jenny’s outfit. The audience is so corny. Ken needs a whooping for that Mariah guess. #MaskedSinger” wrote another.
“Ken did not say Mariah. I’m done with him!” one viewer wrote.
“The hesitation in Nick Cannon’s voice when he said ‘Ken thought you were Mariah Carey so you must’ve done a really good job.’ Iconic” wrote another.
Wendy Spoke Out About Ken’s Odd Guess
Even Wendy herself was confused about why Ken guessed that it was Mariah under the mask. “I mean, why would he say that?” Wendy said in her post-show interview. “I don’t sing like Mariah. I sing awfully. But, you know, that’s flattering. That’s a good comparison. Not a bad looking woman.”
When Ken’s guess was initially read out loud, Nick did note that Mariah is a native New Yorker which was relative to the song that Lips sang. Perhaps that’s why Ken made that guess or he was just being his typical goofball self.
After the big reveal, Ken tweeted “This is truly embarrassing.” We would have to agree with him considering Mariah is a musical legend and would definitely be singing some whistle tones if she was on the show.
With all of this said, we still admire Wendy for being on The Masked Singer and having fun. That’s what the show is all about and it is clear she has been a huge fan of the show since season one.
