America’s favourite talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres joined the American Idol judge lineup back in 2010. Joining Cowell on his last season, it seemed Ellen DeGeneres was the perfect fit. Years later, she spoke out on how she wasn’t the right fit for the show and found the experience discomforting. Here’s a look back at Ellen DeGeneres’ time on the singing show.

Ellen DeGeneres lasted 1 SEASON on Idol, before calling it ‘one of the worst decisions’

From the minute Ellen joined the Idol judge lineup, it was nothing but mischief from her side of the desk. Although the talk show host found it particularly hard to break bad news during the show, that didn’t stop her from teasing contestants along the way! In the video below, Ellen takes a hilarious stance on the Hollywood stage of the competition, making contestants walk back and forth, before revealing that they were all through to the next round.

We later learnt that Ellen found the Hollywood stage of the show particularly difficult. In an interview with Howard Stern, DeGeneres revealed that she found it hard to give criticism to contestants.

Here’s what Ellen had to say about her time on American Idol, calling it ‘one of the worst decisions’.

“That’s one of the worst decisions I’ve made. As a fan of the shows, it doesn’t matter that I sing or I know anything about pitch … I’m like everybody else at home, so I thought I’m gonna represent those people at home that have opinions. It didn’t feel like the right fit for me.”

After leaving Idol, Ellen launched a record label called ‘eleveneleven’. Artists signed to the label included: Greyson Chance, Jessica Simpson, Tom Andrews and Savannah Robinson. The talk show host mentioned that she hoped to sign more artists to her label, especially those that sing on YouTube. The label went out of business two years later.

Ellen continues to incorporate talent show segments on her daytime show

So maybe the judging role on American Idol wasn’t Ellen’s best move. However, the comedian and talk show host regularly incorporates talent show-themed segments on her daytime show.

First up, The Voice. Ellen revealed on her show, that she likes to play a game when The Voice airs with her wife, Portia at home. The game is fairly simple. You face away from the TV once the singer begins to perform and try and guess what they look like. DeGeneres brought the idea to national television and it proved to be a hit with over 34 million views on Youtube!

We’ve all heard of The Masked Singer, but what about The Masked Dancer? This has been a fan favourite on The Ellen Show, so much so that Fox has officially bought the rights to air the show on their network. So, how does it work? Funnily enough, it’s no different to The Masked Singer. Celebrities perform for the judges in a costume. The only difference is they dance, not sing. It’s then down to the detective judges to guess who’s behind the mask. Previous contestants on the segment include Howie Mandel and Derek Hough.
