Lionel Richie And Luke Bryan Might Not Return To ‘American Idol’ Without Katy Perry
If Katy Perry leaves American Idol, will she take Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan with her? The series was officially renewed for a third season on ABC earlier this month, but there’s still the question of which judges will return.
According to Variety, ABC has asked Fremantle Media to cut costs if it wants to keep American Idol a long-term series on the network. This could be complicated by Katy Perry’s reported $25 million deal for the show — and by what her fellow judges recently told reporters.
What Would It Take For The Judges To Return?
After Sunday’s finale, People reports that the judges were asked what it would take to bring them back next season. Both Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan seemed to suggest that they wouldn’t do another season without the same judging panel.
“What would it take? The same thing we did this year,” Lionel said. “We got the three greatest personalities ever on this show. When I started with this group I was a bit worried. I kept telling America to pray for me, but now that I know everybody and their characters, I would not do another show without them!”
Luke seemed to agree that things should stay as they are, saying, “You know, we’ve had an amazing two years. It feels like this year we came in and had a clearer vision and developed our identity and our role. We want to keep that going. We’re proud of what people at home are watching.”
Katy was less loquacious on the topic, reportedly chiming in to say, “It feels good that we’re really getting to know each other.”
Will They Keep Their Promise?
Obviously, a lot more goes into these decisions than simply wanting to work with the same people again — like, as we’ve already established, money. But if Katy ends up leaving the show, it might look a little awkward for Lionel and Luke to sign on without her after waxing poetic about their dynamic.
Then again, maybe they’ll keep to their word and tell ABC that’s it’s all of them or none of them. Or maybe Katy will just settle for a few million less and it won’t even be an issue, because really? Who needs that much money?
