‘The Voice’s Lauren Duski Releases New Single
The Voice Season 12 runner-up Lauren Duski released a new single called “Costume Party” today! The song showcases her smooth, impressive vocals and hones in on the slow, country ballad-type songs that skyrocketed her to the top on The Voice. The song’s lyrics address the high price tag of success and the pressure to present yourself in a certain way. This is the Team Blake alum’s first new song since finishing her run on the show over a year ago. Take a listen here:
Lauren has been extremely vulnerable and honest in her posts and interviews surrounding the song. Because it touches on such poignant and difficult topics, Lauren had to present the most emotionally raw and genuine version of herself to record it. In explaining the inspiration for the song, she said:
I feel like there’s so much pressure on everyone to live a certain way, to be a certain way. I didn’t even realize how much control social media and the opinions of others really had on me.
Since her appearance on The Voice, Lauren has spent the last year writing over 150 songs. The day she and co-writer Justin Morgan wrote “Costume Party,” Lauren knew she wanted to share its message with the world. But Lauren didn’t even dream of the impact the song would have on not only her music career, but also her outlook on life:
This song kind of brought more clarity than I could have ever asked for. I realized after finishing the song that I’m okay not being okay all the time but knowing that I have to start just accepting myself and loving myself. It seems so easy but I feel like I can’t even help but compare myself to other artists, other women. We are our best selves when we just accept ourselves.
And the impact the song has had goes far beyond just Lauren. She has seen a massive response on social media from people sharing similar stories and struggles. The feeling that you need compare yourself to others and the constant expectations thrust onto people are clearly widespread issues. The response so far has left Lauren “overwhelmed”:
It’s really opened people up and led them to share some really personal stories with me and that’s been incredible.
Unfortunately, not all the response was positive though. When she debuted the cover art a few weeks ago, she was criticized for it. But Lauren used that example to prove the exact point her song is making:
I’ve had some messages, comments, and whatever you wills about the cover choice for my single “Costume Party.” People telling me to cover up – that a woman should be more classy – that I look too skinny. Others refusing to use the photo for promo because it looks as if “I’m not wearing anything.” So here’s a statement on that and a few other things. I am not your cover girl. I am a normal girl from the midwest who wrote a song about all the rampant insecurities someone like me should have every reason NOT to have.
The cover photo for “Costume Party” is bare, stripped, and free of any expensive clothes and jewelry that barely anyone can afford. It’s just me, the girl from the small town, sitting in her most vulnerable state. We didn’t touch the image up. We didn’t fix my uneven collarbone or brush out my freckles. I’m wearing a limited amount of makeup that I put on by myself, no expensive makeup crew. Reality isn’t perfect and people need to know that that’s ok.
Lauren has been doing an amazing job promoting this song and speaking out on these issues we all face. It goes without saying that her fans are all happy that she is doing as well as she is! On Friday, Lauren will be performing at Alpenfest in her hometown of Gaylord. She first sang at Alpenfest when she was just seven years old so this is truly full circle for her. After her performance in Michigan, Lauren will be heading back to Nashville to prepare for her first tour with Bobby Bones.
