Katy Perry Says If The New ‘American Idol’ Doesn’t Produce A Star They Are ‘Wasting Their Time’
In the early days of American Idol, the Simon Cowell years, the show produced some serious stars. Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken to name just a few. But in its latter years, not so much. The later winners of the show fell into the trap that so many talent show champions do where they are never heard from again. According to Katy Perry, the reboot of American Idol will seek to make stars again their #1 priority.
Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Ryan Seacrest are all immensely busy people. They don’t have time to waste on a sideshow, hence why they are getting rid of the ‘joke’ auditions. Katy and co. are in it to produce a real bonafide American superstar. If they don’t then what indeed is the point. She said,
“Literally, we are wasting our time if we do not find a star. You know, America doesn’t need another star. They need, like, a real legit American Idol. It’s a crowded place, and I take it really seriously, sometimes to my detriment. But I’m very cut-and-dry and get straight to the point, but I think that is our purpose.”
She’s got a point. What IS the point? If these shows exist to produce global stars and they don’t then they are useless. They are just an entertaining few hours that we enjoy and then promptly forget about. What they are up against is not only that they will be competing for ratings against The Voice but also trying to recapture the spark that made the show a success back in the day. Covering all these shows I have to wonder if the x-factor, (no pun intended), is Simon Cowell.
