Kanye West’s History With Public Mental Breakdowns — Are They Trigged By His Mother’s Death?
Kanye West has been making waves recently after announcing he will be running for President in 2020. Some of his comments have raised concerns for his mental health which is something that he has openly struggled with in the past.
Kanye West Has Been Very Open About Having Mental Breakdowns
Back in 2016, Kanye was hospitalized for a “psychiatric emergency.” The rapper was reportedly experiencing sleep deprivation and erratic behavior that led his doctor to call the police and have him taken to the hospital for an evaluation. This came after he was wearing himself thin being on tour and constantly traveling which he then had to postpone. Videos went viral of the rapper at his concerts going on rants that initially had people very concerned for his mental health.
He later admitted in an interview that one of the factors leading up to this mental breakdown was his ongoing drama with Taylor Swift. “Ever since the Taylor Swift moment it just had never been the same, the connection with radio. It’s like whatever powers that be it was much harder after that” he said.
He infamously interrupted her speech at the MTV VMA’s in 2009. And after it seemed like the pair had patched things up, there was a ton of controversy after Kanye wrote a song with explicit lyrics about Taylor that she claimed she did not approve of. Kanye was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2014 and has said there is a “stigma” associated with the illness. In a new interview on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, he spoke about his 2016 hospitalization. “They have this moment where they put you — they handcuff you, they drug you, they put you on the bed and they separate you from everyone you know,” he said.
Do Kanye’s Mental Health Episodes Have Something To Do With His Moms Death?
There are countless interviews and appearances where Kanye has pointed the focus to his busy schedule as the source of a lot of his frustration and breakdowns. “I do not like the word ambitious. I’m Kanye West,” he said in an interview with WSJ Magazine after his breakdown. “The word ambitious is beneath my abilities. I’m just a doer. You can see in my eyes there’s not one bit of fear.” But the real reason may be a lot deeper than we think. He opened up about his struggles with opioid addiction after getting liposuction, the same procedure that his mother died from in 2007. On an appearance on TMZ, Kanye began screaming in the office about his ongoing opioid struggles saying “I was drugged out” before landing in the hospital. Take a look at the video below.
On July 12, 2020, Kanye posted a tribute to his mother on her birthday. After his 2016 hospital stay, TMZ reported that Kanye’s mental breakdown was triggered by the anniversary of his mother’s death which happened around the same time as his November hospital stay. Sources told TMZ that the added stress and sadness from that contributed to his “nervous breakdown.” The loss of his mother could very well be triggering his mental health.
Kim Kardashian Is Fearing Another Mental Breakdown As Kanye Is Running For Office
Recent reports have said that Kanye is suffering from another episode after announcing that he is running for President. His wife Kim Kardashian is particularly concerned and frustrated that the rapper has bitten off more than he can chew. Kim retweeted a video of Kanye telling people how to register to vote, showing her support for her husband’s presidential bid. But, it was reported that she looked tense after filming some scenes for the new season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. This comes after a source close to the couple said that “Kanye’s behavior is very unpredictable.” The source went on to say that Kanye typically has one depressive episode a year where he struggles with his bipolar disorder. The source maintains that this leads him to make sporadic decisions that affect Kim and cause her to have added stress.
She is fearing that he is currently having one of those episodes as he continues his return to social media with plans for his campaign. “Kim will always support Kanye, but she doesn’t have to always agree with him, and that’s what makes their relationship special,” a source told ET. But, not everyone is viewing Kanye’s latest antics as controversial. Chance The Rapper just pledged his support for Kanye’s presidential bid on Twitter and is confident that Kanye is in the right mindset.
