Julianne Hough Is Slammed By Fellow Fired ‘AGT’ Judge Gabrielle Union For Black Face
Both Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough were fired after only one season on the judging panel of America’s Got Talent. Since speaking out publicly about the toxic work culture and racism she experienced on the show, Union has since filed a formal complaint. She mentioned Hough in this complaint and how it is clear that NBC has turned a blind eye to racism after Hough wore blackface in 2013.
Gabrielle Union Questioned NBC For Hiring Julianne Hough
Union wanted to make it clear that NBC is a huge part of the issues she faced with discrimination and racism. She said that the network has defended people like Hough who wore blackface in the past. On Halloween in 2013, Hough dressed as Crazy Eyes, a black character from the Netflix show Orange Is The New Black. This sparked outrage because people found it completely inappropriate and ignorant for a high-profile celebrity to do. She put out an initial apology in 2013 and another one in 2015 when the pictures resurfaced. She said “I really had no idea what I was doing, and it was all out of fun and respect for the character. I don’t even know how to talk about it because it’s such a sensitive topic. It makes me so sad to think that I was that dumb. I learned a big lesson.”
For Union, hiring Hough in the first place was a bit of a slap in the face. In an interview with Variety, Gabrielle spoke about how there were certain acts on America’s Got Talent that really struck a nerve with her that were very offensive to the black culture. One white contestant put on black gloves to represent a black performer and was not immediately shut down. This coupled with the fact that her fellow judge Julianne Hough was not held accountable for wearing blackface by NBC was where she reached her limits. She did not know why this issue was never addressed by producers or spoken about more publicly. In response to big productions like NBC and Freemantle, Union said “Your solution can’t be an edit button.”
Julianne Has Remained Quiet On The Subject
Union’s issue is that other black employees of NBC did not seem to have a problem with their fellow co-workers wearing blackface along with hiring other celebrities that have displayed discriminatory actions. The complaint also specifically references news anchor Al Roker who “seemed fine with blackface.” Right after pointing out Hough’s use of blackface, the complaint goes on saying that “NBC is a snake-pit of racial offenses.”
Hough has not said anything regarding Union mentioning her in this complaint. It seems like she has been dealing with a lot of her own personal issues lately after she announced her separation from husband Brooks Laich. But, this did not stop her from lending her voice to the Black Lives Matter movement after the death of George Floyd.
Hough has made countless social media posts saying that she and her brand Kinrgy stand for equality. She also posted to honor Breonna Taylor on what would have been her 27th birthday. Taylor was a black woman that lost her life due to police brutality.
Union’s formal complaint could land the NBC executives along with Simon Cowell in court or lead to arbitration for her.
