One of the most popular winners in the history of America’s Got Talent is card magician Shim Lim. He won not once but twice, (Regular AGT and AGT: The Champions). But there’s a new young card magician on the show this season, Eric Chien. Will the very recent wins of Shin Lim handicap Eric Chien in the competition?
Shin Lim is the OG AGT Card Magician
One of the amazing things about America’s Got Talent is that it really delivers as a variety show. Where else are you going to see card magic on TV. When Shin Lim first came on last year I wondered how far can you get doing card tricks on TV. It turns out pretty damn far. He just kept upping his game and there was little doubt he was going to win by the finals. When he came back as the reigning winner on AGT: The Champions he was also considered the one to beat. He pulled off another victory.

Unfortunately for Eric Chien he’s been compared to Shin Lim from his first appearance. Rather than being considered his own performer, he’s been called “The Second Coming Of Shin Lim”…including by us at Talent Recap. Eric is an amazing performer in his own right. His slight of hand skills and the way he misdirects are flawless. And yet, he’s still caught under Shin Lim’s shadow.
I have a feeling it’s going to hurt him in the competition. I would not be surprised if he moves forward on tonight’s show but I think he won’t make it out of the semifinals. It would be very strange for America to vote for a card magician three times in a row. Then the show becomes America’s Got Magicians. Still, you never know. Eric could pull it off, after all he is a magician!
