One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles are adding their voices to protests against police brutality after the death of George Floyd. Louis posted a message on Instagram and Twitter sharing his thoughts.
Floyd died last week after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned him down with a knee on his neck during an arrest. Chauvin has since been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Louis Tomlinson Condemns Police Brutality
Louis started his message by acknowledging his privilege, writing, “I am fortunate to have been able to live my life without prejudice.” He went on to say he was “appalled and deeply saddened” by the police brutality he has witnessed recently.
“It is disgusting that many people continue to live in fear purely due to the colour of their skin,” he wrote. “Enough is enough. I want to let the black community know that I stand with you, and with anyone protesting in support of racial equality.”
Louis said he had donated “to a number of charities,” and linked to this website for more information on how fans can help. He ended his message by saying, “I am with you. Black Lives Matter.”
Harry Styles Donates Post Bail Funds
Louis’ former band mate Harry Styles also posted his thoughts on the issues. Like Louis, he acknowledged, “I am privileged every day because I am white.” He added that “being not racist is not enough, we must be anti racist.”
Harry posted a yellow and black image that reads “Black Lives Matter.” He then shared that he is “donating to help post bail for arrested organizers.” He encouraged his followers to “LISTEN, READ, SHARE, DONATE and VOTE.”
Fans are proud of Louis and Harry for speaking up about these important issues. One commenter wrote on Louis Tomlinson’s Instagram post that “this is what using your platform as an influencer looks like.” They added that “other influencers should take notes.”
