How Long Has Dwyane Wade’s Daughter Zaya Known Her Real Gender Identity?
Instagram | @dwyanewade Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have repeatedly shown that they are amazing parents. And, in a recent interview with Good Morning America, Wade shows how good of a parent he is once again.
In the interview, he discusses his daughter Zaya, whose sex was assigned male at birth. First, he reveals that Zaya has known her identity. According to Wade,
“She’s known it for nine years. She’s known since she was three years old. Along this way, we’ve asked questions and we’ve learned. But she’s known.”

Additionally, Dwyane discusses how his daughter helped him realize that some of his own behavior wasn’t the best. According to Wade, he has participated in “locker room talk,” that wouldn’t agree with his current position.
“I knew early on that I had to ask myself questions. I’ve been a person in a locker room that has been a part of the conversation that has said the wrong phrases and the wrong words myself….Hopefully I’m dealing with it the right way. Some people feel that I’m not. But inside our home, we see the smile on her face. We see the confidence that she’s able to walk around and be herself.”

Dwyane Wade’s Supportive Family
While Wade has been supportive of his daughter’s coming out, the rest of Zaya’s family has as well.
Zaya’s brother Zaire posted on Instagram about his little sister, referring to Zaya as his “best friend.” Furthermore, he said, “I don’t care what they think Z, you are my best friend and I love you kid, and if it means anything, just know there’s no love lost on this side.”

Gabrielle Union, Wade’s wife, has also been supportive. Posting on her social media, that Zaya was, “compassionate, loving, [and] whip-smart.”
