Hollywood Week Begins On ‘American Idol’
It was a night filled with drama, mostly because of decisions by the judges on the reboot of American Idol. The competition moves to Hollywood where all of those golden ticket holders arrive to take their opportunity to make it passed round one. The whole process looks rather chaotic but in the end some of our audition favorites stayed and many others left.
First they brought out different groups of singers in a line and had them each sing. This reminds me of the nightmarish cattle call auditions I’ve been to. Layla Spring, (remember her and her cute sister Dyxie?), the incredible Alyssa Raghu, goat farmer extraordinaire Trevor McBane, and Caleb Lee Hutchinson all survived this round.
Noah ‘Wig’ Davis easily makes it through and then things get interesting. Twin brothers Milo and Julian Sposato are split up by the judges with only Milo getting through. Awkward.
Carrie Underwood’s hometown hero Kenedee Rittenhouse was sent home along with Joshua Ward or Kristyn Harris. Then we see Catie Turner who rocks The Beatles’ Come Together. She’s bringing awkward back into style. Zach D’Onofrio, the nebbish guy with the Frank Sinatra voice, unfortunately got cut. But then we were cheered up by American Idol baby Victoria McQueen’s bubbly personality. She made it through, of course.
Maddie Poppe and Cade Foehner got through as did Jonny Brenns, Jurnee, Dennis Lorenzo, and Katy Perry’s major crush Trevor Holmes.
Then they cut David Francisco, the young man who was int he car accident and that surprised me because he was really good.
Next came the groups competition where the singers are forced to perform in…well…groups. First up was God’s Diversity with Michael J. Woodward, Thaddeus Johnson, Shannon O’Hara, and Kourtney Smith. They all move forward because they were all really great.
Next came The Gurope Marcio Donaldson, Samuel James, Maddie Zahn, and Cesley Parrish who were not so great. They forgot words but plowed through. Everyone but Samuel made it through to the solos.
TACO! is a supergroup of some of the favorites from the auditions including Catie Turner, Alyssa Rahgu, Victoria McQueen, and Kyah Robinson. The first three did amazing jobs but Kyah seemed a little lost and was cut. Who knew Catie Turner could beatbox?
Then came Superdope Hotness with Anamé Rose, Deonte Baker, Dennis Lorenzo, William Casanova, and Milo Sposato, who wanted his verse a capella. After a bunch of drama and Milo’s mom being a real Yoko, they all easily made it through.
Drag superstar Ada Vox and Kay Kay make it through from their group DNA and Gabby Barrett and Christina Jones do as well from their group. Jurnee and Dominique made it to the solos as well which is no surprise.
Then poor Laine Hardy, the country gator-hunting boy from Louisiana, is forced to sing Justin Bieber. That’s just not right, y’all. But he manages to pull it off. I’m glad because he’s one of my favorites.
OK, this is when things get messed up. So, Crystal Alicea, Lee Vasi, Gabbii Jones, and Britney Holmes come on as Don’t Touch. Poor Crystal is a bit out of her depth with the other singers being much more experienced. It looks for sure like she was going to get cut. But instead of just cutting her, Katy Perry announces that one of them has to volunteer to leave. Crystal does and bursts into tears. Then Katy says she’s just kidding and they are all going through. Lionel and Luke then have to go and hug Crystal and comfort her.
What the hell, Katy?
