WHAT! After Nespresso’s Child Labor Exposé, George Clooney STILL WON’T Resign?
George Clooney has been at the forefront of Nespresso’s advertising for many years. Now, the company is facing fierce criticism after it has been exposed for using child labor. Clooney’s response? The A-list celebrity claims he never knew and was ‘surprised’ when he heard the news.
George Clooney is ‘saddened’ by the news
Clooney has been the face of coffee brand, Nespresso since 2006. Featuring in adverts, billboards and online screens in stores across the world, it’s fair to say that Clooney is hard to miss.
The brand, however is facing criticism after Channel 4 journalist, Anthony Barnett is set to expose the brand for using child labour in an upcoming documentary. Clooney quickly responded to the news, hoping that action will be taken to combat child labor on Nespresso bean farms.
The Hollywood actor and filmmaker has already praised the journalists at Channel 4 that uncovered the story. Here is the full statement George Clooney made after the story broke:
“Having grown up working on a tobacco farm from the time I was 12 I’m uniquely aware of the complex issues regarding farming and child labor. That’s why I joined the Sustainability advisory board of Nespresso seven years ago along with the Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade International, and the Fair Labour Association among many others with the goal then, as it remains to this day to improve the lives of farmers. With that in mind it is also imperative to have talented investigative reporters showing the board where they have yet to succeed … Clearly this board and this company still have work to do.”George Clooney
TV show, Dispatched will air the full episode giving an inside look into the bean farms
‘Dispatches’, which airs on Channel 4 will air the entire documentary as Anthony Barnett and his camera crew set foot onto the coffee farms. The TV show first began in 1987 and has uncovered some of the world’s biggest controversial stories. ‘Gaza: The Killing Zone’, ‘MMR: What They Didn’t Tell You’ and ‘Inside Britain’s Israel Lobby’ are just a few of their biggest episodes.
Twitter responds in anger to the investigation
One user responded to the news by questioning why Clooney hasn’t resigned. ‘Has he threatened to walk away from all that money? NO’, they continue.
Another user pointed out the unlikelihood that Clooney will donate the money he’s earned from Nespresso advertising to the cause.
