Ricky John Was Homeless For 8 Years Before ‘X Factor’ Audition
Ricky came to The X Factor at 36 years old with a story of triumph. “Life, before I met my partner, wasn’t great,” he said. “When I grew up, I was on my own from sort of like 16. Now I’ve met my Alisha, we just hit it off. We had great chemistry. She’s given me my two beautiful children and she’s given me my smile back.” For him, family means everything. “They have just changed my life to the point that I didn’t think I’d ever see anything this beautiful and it’s so amazing” he continued. “This is giving us this opportunity where something can be good in our lives. We could actually have something.”
Ricky sang “A Change Is Gonna Come” and midway through, his emotions got the best of him and he forgot the words. But he picked back up and started again and continued on with remarkable vocals. Judge Louis Tomlinson called it “an unbelievable audition.” The other judges continued to offer their praises for his amazing performance. “Ricky, your voice is so strong and your personality is strong. I want to see so much more from you” said judge Robbie Williams. “This is why we make this show. Genuinely, to find people like you” Simon Cowell concluded. He was voted into the next round where judge Ayda Williams pushed her ‘X Factor’ button.
Ricky was later eliminated from the show much to the outrage of ‘X Factor’ fans. This led #BringBackRickyJohn to trend on Twitter. “Everywhere I go there are people tooting out of cars shouting ‘it’s a travesty’. It’s been lovely” Ricky said of his elimination.
Where Is He Now?
After his very memorable time on The X Factor, Ricky signed with Rooftop Records. His cover of “Change Is Gonna Come” is actually up on Spotify so definitely take a listen to it. But, it does look like Ricky has taken creating music into his own hands. On Instagram, he always shows glimpses of things he is working on and his music has taken a new approach. Take a listen for yourself.
He has for sure gone in a more pop and R&B direction.
He also shared this video singing on the sidewalk back in 2019.
One thing that is evident from Ricky’s time on The X Factor is that he will always have a strong group of supporters behind him in anything that he does.
