Gwen Stefani and Saweetie Collaborate on ‘Slow Clap’

In the “Slow Clap” music video, Stefani goes back to school…literally! We get to see glimpses of her dancing around in a high school gym, a locker room, and sitting in the bleachers, all very on-brand.

The video is full of hard-hitting dance moves and references to Stefani’s past including the line “I ain’t no Hollaback bitch/ Now I got it, I ain’t gotta act rich.”

This is a reference to her 2005 hit “Hollaback Girl” and her 2004 Grammy-nominated song “Rich Girl.”

In the video, Saweetie dons a hot pink wig as she struts around the school. She and Stefani take turns skipping rope and jumping around wearing gorgeous ballgowns. The choice to do this collaboration with Saweetie reportedly came after Stefani saw an Instagram video.

“I saw on the internet that Saweetie had posted her listening to my song ‘Luxurious,'” Stefani told Variety. “So then I wrote to the guy helping me find a feature, ‘Oh look, it’s in the air, Saweetie’s listening to my song. He said, ‘Oh, you want her to hop on your song?’ I said, ‘Sure!’ and then literally the next day she posts, ‘I’m going in to work with someone, here’s a clue: she’s iconic.'”

Fans Are Torn About the Collaboration

After over two decades in the music world, Stefani, who is engaged to country star and current coach on The Voice, Blake Shelton, has some die-hard fans that love every single one of her releases. They took to the comments section of the music video to express their excitement about the song.

“I’m so grateful to Gwen for continuing to make bops and sick music videos,” one fan wrote. “While the rest of the world is going downhill I have this masterpiece to remind me of how simple things were in the 90’s/00’s when she was topping the charts.”

“This is a FUN song!” wrote another. “Looks like Saweetie had a blast collaborating with Gwen and there is SO MUCH JOY! She deserves it after the past few weeks she’s had. You love to see it!”

Saweetie recently broke things off with boyfriend Quavo. A video surfaced of the pair getting into a violent altercation in an elevator. In this new video, she is all smiles as she moves on to some brighter things in life.

While some love the “Slow Clap” collaboration, others had some differing opinions on the song.

Many questioned whether the high school video concept is appropriate for 51-year-old Stefani and 27-year-old Saweetie, which was then called out as an example of ageism women in Hollywood constantly face.

Other critics think “Slow Clap” sounds like a Disney Channel song.

Another person said she was “disappointed” with the collaboration on twitter.

“I honestly thought the Saweetie and Gwen Stefani song was actually gonna be good???” another wrote.
