Emotional “DOPE” Drummer Dedicates His ‘AGT’ Act To His Dying Father [VIDEO]
Malik Stewart aka “Malik DOPE” performed last night on America’s Got Talent and while his performance was breathtaking, his story tugged at America’s heartstrings. Before we go into his story, let’s learn a little bit about Malik.
He is a Washington, D.C. Native from the Uptown area and started playing drums around the age of 5. His inspiration was sparked by African drum and dance. During his audition on America’s Got Talent, Malik DOPE drummed to portions of Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now” and J.Balvin’s “Mi Gente.”
Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel all voted “Yes”, sending Malik to the Judge Cuts round
Malik “DOPE” And The Heartbreaking Story Behind His ‘America’s Got Talent’ Performance
In an Instagram post, Malik shared the battle his father is battling behind the scenes.
He wrote “So the past few days have been very tough. 5 days ago my father Darryl Stewart aka Ras Mugabe expressed that he was having pain in his abdominal area. He was then taken to the hospital where they searched for what might be causing him pain. They found that he has infected scar tissue which stemmed from a bad car accident he experienced when I was a child. As the doctors performed a surgery to remove the infected tissue it had already created a hole in his bowel area which made it even more difficult for them to thoroughly get it all out because the other intestines are right there and the state his body is in, he wouldn’t have survived that so the doctors did what they could but weren’t able to effectively remove all of the infection or close the hole in his bowel region which will only create more infection since his body can’t process and exit the waste out properly.”
The post went on “The medical term is called a “Frozen Abdomen”. At this point, there is no recovery from this and no exact time frame of how long he will live but it is not a long shot of life-based on his very fragile state currently. The doctors respectfully told our family to decide on what we want to do because he was on the breathing tube (as seen in the video) but couldn’t remain on it forever and that there’s no curing the infection so we as a family made the extremely difficult choice to allow him to transition peacefully and naturally with no pain. So 2 DAYS ago we removed the breathing tube to see how well he can breathe on his own. CURRENTLY, he is STILL breathing but the highest probability is that it will eventually decline. He can pass any day or week, we cannot guess when or how long he has. Our next step would be hospice care at this point.”
He emphasized, “IM WRITING THIS MESSAGE IN CASE ANY OF OUR OTHER FAMILY OR RASTA FAM IS NOT AWARE OF THIS. WE ASK THAT YOU ALL KEEP HIM IN YOUR PRAYERS AND BLESSINGS AS WE AID HIM IN HIS HOMECOMING. THANK YOU ALL FOR SUPPORTING THUS FAR. HE’S TOUCHED A LOT OF SOULS AND HAS HAD AN AMAZING LIFE, CREATING AN AMAZING LEGACY. AT THIS POINT WE WILL LEAVE IT TO THE POWERS ABOVE TO COME GET HIM. SENDING LOVE AND LIGHT TO MY FATHER…THE FAMILY AND I WILL HONOR YOU FOREVER”
