Singer Performs Heartbreaking Original Song About Losing His Son On ‘AGT’
NBC Johnny Shelton always knew that he wanted to pursue music from a young age. The 25-year-old came to America’s Got Talent with an original song dedicated to his late son who died from a rare lymph node cancer. Take a look at one of the most moving moments in ‘AGT’ history below.
Johnny Shelton Performed An Original Song Dedicated To His Son On ‘AGT’
“The one thing I always wanted to put in my son’s mind was no matter what happens in the world know the joy of love because the world doesn’t need any more hate in it,” Johnny said before his America’s Got Talent audition. He spoke about how his son was the spitting image of him and revealed he passed away on his fifth birthday, a year and a half before his ‘AGT’ appearance. Two months before his audition, Johnny returned to performing and slowly began feeling like himself again. For his audition, he performed an original song called “That’s Love.” It was a very personal account of his relationship with his son and the heartbreak he is feeling after his death. “I’m speechless,” Howie Mandel said. “When you told us your story and when you sing that song, there is nothing more moving.”

Heidi Klum agreed that the song made her feel very emotional as she is also a parent. “You really do have something special. You could actually hear a pin drop. Everyone was hanging onto your every word.” Mel B said. “You’re a real artist. There was nothing phony about that. That was real from the heart” Howard Stern said. Howard went on to say that it was “inspirational.” After the critiques, Howie said, “We all have children here and there’s no love stronger than a parent has for a child and you’re right, nothing could take that away and I feel the energy of your child with you here and amongst us and the love has spread throughout this panel and this whole room.” Johnny was sent to Judge Cuts but he was later eliminated from the competition.
Where Is He Now?
After his ‘AGT’ audition went viral, Johnny began selling t-shirts to benefit Peach’s Neet Feet, a nonprofit that creates custom sneakers for children fighting cancer. Johnny continues to post covers and glimpses of original music on social media. He posted one cover with the caption “This song means a lot to me, especially when I think of my late son.”
He recently released The Johnny Shelton Band album which is available on all streaming platforms.
He encouraged people to listed to his song “Nova.” He calls it a song “you can sleep to, drive to or smoke to.”
One thing we know for certain is that Johnny has some more incredible music up his sleeve. His time on ‘AGT’ was only just a small glimpse of how great of a songwriter he is and how he taps into his emotions while performing.
