The Dancing With the Stars Season 28 Movie Night opening number

Things started off with a fun opening number from Kathryn Burns to “Fame”, a very appropriate song for the theme! It was great to see the pros be able to go all-out with their dancing in this first group number of the season.

The Competitive Routines On DWTS

Lauren and Gleb’s tango on Dancing With the Stars

This week on ‘DWTS’ Lauren danced a Tango to the title song from Pretty Woman, a routine she told her father not to tune in for. Why? Because it was quite a bit raunchier than she’s used to acting. She did a pretty good job with it though, even though she was noticeably wobbly in places.

Bruno: 7
Total Score: 20/30

Hannah & Alan

Hannah and Alan danced a rumba in honor of Bridesmaids, complete with a bachelorette party with Alan as the stripper! The judges complimented her on her great lines and lyricism but pointed out she needed to include some serious hip action.

Karamo & Jenna

Karamo and Jenna’s jive on Dancing With the Stars

After a special cameo from Taron Egerton on ‘DWTS’, Karamo and Jenna danced a jive to “I’m Still Standing” in celebration of Rocketman. At first it was looking great but it quickly fell apart, with lots of off-time moments and lack of pointed toes in the kicks – a jive essential!

Len: 5
Bruno: 6
Total Score: 16/30

Ally & Sasha

Ally danced in tribute to Selena, the late singer being one of her personal icons. She had the great lines, hip action, and sensuality needed for a rumba; this was a true breakthrough for her! She got lots of compliments from the judges, with Len pointing out that even though she wasn’t wearing a rumba-typical outfit designed to enhance her moves, it was clear she was executing them correctly regardless.

Ray & Cheryl

Julia Delbel | Talent Recap Ray Lewis was forced to withdraw from Dancing With the Stars due to injury

Ray tore three tendons dancing and requires surgery as a result, forcing him to drop out of the competition. He called it “one of the hardest decisions of [his] life”, but ultimately had to put his health first. This marked the second drop-out due to injury of the season, since Christie Brinkley had to bow out a few days before the premiere. Cheryl still danced their cha-cha to “Twist and Shout” in celebration of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but instead with another NFL retiree – DWTS Season 24 champion Rashad Jennings!

James & Emma

James danced a rumba to “Shallow” from the 2018 remake of A Star in Born in honor of his wife. Carrie Ann and Bruno raved about it, and Len was also pleased, if a bit critical on some of his technique. Another great performance from James and Emma!

Kate & Pasha

Kate and Pasha’s quickstep on Dancing With the Stars

Kate is really proving to be a contender for that Mirrorball trophy! She was technically excellent in her quickstep to the title song from 9 to 5 but also had a great performance and acting style! The judges loved it all.

Len: 8
Bruno: 8
Total Score: 24/30

Lamar & Peta

Lamar and Peta’s cha-cha on Dancing With the Stars

Lamar seemed to loosen up this week, which was good considering he and Peta were paying tribute to Risky Business. He did decently well with a few of the basic dance moves, but not the actual cha-cha content. However, the judges still commended him on his effort and improvement on ‘DWTS’.

Total Score: 12/30

Sailor & Val

Sailor and Val’s tango on Dancing With the Stars

Sailor had a great breakthrough dance this week with her Tango to the title song from Mamma Mia! She had both the technique and power needed for a strong tango, and it was clear she was having a blast while performing it.

Len: 8
Bruno: 8
Total Score: 23/30

Kel & Witney

Kel and Witney’s rumba on Dancing With the Stars

Kel and Witney had a Rumba to “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic this week. Len gave him some constructive criticism on his shaping and toning and Carrie Ann said he was a bit “tight” but the judges did compliment him on his work ethic and solid performance.

Len: 6
Bruno: 7
Total Score: 20/30

Sean & Lindsay

Sean and Lindsay’s cha-cha on Dancing With the Stars

Sean and Lindsay closed ‘DWTS’ with a cha-cha to “Night Fever” from Saturday Night Fever but in Len’s eyes it was more along the lines of “Monday Night Lukewarm”. Sean mostly stomped around and didn’t execute the cha-cha technique properly, though it was an improvement over his previous Latin dance.

The Results On ‘DWTS’

Tom and Erin called eight couples as safe in no particular order, and we were left with a bottom two of Lamar & Peta and Kel & Witney. I had expected Lamar to go last week and wasn’t surprised to see him there, and while I thought Kel would have garnered up enough support to stay out of this position for another week or two he doesn’t seem to be “breaking through” like some of the others are quite yet.

Based on dance ability it seemed pretty obvious that the judges would have saved Kel over Lamar, but Len announced that because of Ray’s withdrawl, none of the couples would be eliminated this week and everyone would be moving forward to Week 4 of ‘DWTS‘. This also means that this week’s scores and votes will be combined with next week’s in order to determine next week’s bottom two.
