‘DWTS’ Quarterfinals Recap: SHOCKING ELIMINATION of Sean Spicer!

The Dancing With the Stars Season 28 semi-finals brought back a fun theme from a few seasons ago: boy bands vs. girl groups. Each couple danced to one song from each category, and the show brought in *NSYNC alumus and two-time DWTS contestant Joey Fatone to guest judge! At the end of the night, six couples became five, and here’s what went down to get there.

Boy Bands vs. Girl Groups

The opening number to Dancing With the Stars Season 28 Week 9

The Girl Group Dances on ‘DWTS’

James and Emma

James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater’s jive on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

James and Emma kicked off the night with a wild jive to “I’m So Excited”. The choreography for this was incredible; Emma did not let up and James rose to the challenge for sure…and we think the judges could have given him at least a couple of 10’s for this one!

Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 9
Joey: 9
Bruno: 9
Total: 36/40

Sean and Jenna

Sean Spicer and Jenna Johnson’s Argentine Tango on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

Lindsay was still mourning with her family this week, so Jenna remained as Sean’s dance partner for another episode. Their Argentine Tango to “Bills Bills Bills” was better than Sean’s other dances, but it still mostly consisted of him walking around and not really dancing. And was it just us, or was this routine super short?

Carrie Ann: 7
Len: 6
Joey: 7
Bruno: 6
Total: 26/40

Hannah and Alan

Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten’s salsa on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

Hannah and Alan danced a Salsa to “No Scrubs” for the Girl Group round. This song was very unfitting to the style of dance, but they did a pretty decent job with it. Her timing was off for a fair amount of the performance, but again, a lot of that had to do with the song, and she still managed to “sell” the routine on DWTS.

Carrie Ann: 8
Len: 8
Joey: 8
Bruno: 8
Total: 32/40

Ally and Sasha

Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber’s samba on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

Ally was excited for this week since she’s an alumni of a girl group, Fifth Harmony. Wannabe isn’t really a great song for a samba, but the arrangement was decent enough so that it wasn’t too awkward, and Ally did very well with the technique. (Though this was another dance that was a tad short in length. Hmmm…)

Carrie Ann: 10
Len: 10
Joey: 10
Bruno: 10
Total: 40/40

Lauren and Gleb

Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko’s quickstep on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

Lauren’s quickstep to “You Can’t Hurry Love” was light and fun, and we loved her shout-out to eliminated contestant Mary Wilson! (She totally should have come and performed the song live!) Much like her other performances, it was mostly solid with a few mistakes or moments of doubt

Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 9
Joey: 8
Bruno: 8
Total: 34/40

Kel and Witney

Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson’s Paso Doble on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

Kel danced a powerful Paso Doble to “Free Your Mind”. The majority of it was on point, but he did have an error or two. The sheer power of the routine pretty much made up for that, though!

Carrie Ann: 8
Len: 8
Joey: 9
Bruno: 9
Total: 34/40

Boy Bands on ‘DWTS’

James and Emma

James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater’s jazz on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

James danced a fun jazz routine to “Bye Bye Bye” to kick off the boy band round. The timing was off in some places, but it was pretty solid overall.

Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 8
Joey: 10
Bruno: 9
Total: 36/40 (72/80)

Hannah and Alan

Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten’s Argentine Tango on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

Hannah had a nice comeback from the first round, possibly thanks to the power of BTS with this tango song, “Boy with Luv”. It was sharp, entertaining, and cleanly executed. Great job from her! (And come on Len, this dance deserved a 40!)

Carrie Ann: 10
Len: 9
Joey: 10
Bruno: 10
Total: 39/40 (71/80)

Sean and Jenna

Sean Spicer and Jenna Johnson’s foxtrot on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

We this foxtrot to “Story of My Life”…was actually Sean’s best dance yet, despite the numerous mistakes. And we have to say, Jenna has done a good job choreographing to his skill level after only having worked with him for a little over a week. That being said, this was probably the only dance of his this season on DWTS to be scored accurately.

Carrie Ann: 6
Len: 6
Joey: 6
Bruno: 6
Total: 24/40 (50/80)

Lauren and Gleb

Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko’s rumba on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

With some assistance in rehearsal from Backstreet Boy AJ McLean, Lauren managed to deliver a solid – if short in length and lacking in hip action – rumba with Gleb.

Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 9
Joey: 9
Bruno: 9
Total: 36/40 (70/80)

Kel and Witney

Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson’s foxtrot on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

Kel worked extra-hard on this foxtrot to “I’ll Make Love to You” since it was his first slow dance since being in the bottom 2 the week of his Titanic rumba on DWTS. And it paid off, because he ended up earning his fist perfect score of the season!

Carrie Ann: 10
Len: 10
Joey: 10
Bruno: 10
Total: 40/40 (74/80)

Ally and Sasha

Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber’s jazz on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

Ally finished off the night with a jazz to “Step By Step” which was very well executed and a fun way to end the show!

Carrie Ann: 10
Len: 10
Joey: 10
Bruno: 10
Total: 40/40 (80/80)

Elimination Time

The Week 9 elimination on Dancing With the Stars Season 28

After the dances, Tom and Erin revealed that after the night’s scores and votes were combined, the bottom 2 couples were Lauren and Gleb and Sean and Jenna. We were honestly expecting Sean to make it to the finale after proving his ability to overcome huge score deficits with tons of votes in previous weeks, but this gap proved too big for him to conquer. The judges unsurprisingly saved Lauren, meaning Sean and Jenna (and Lindsay) were eliminated in sixth place.

What dances are you hoping to see the remaining couples do in the semi-finals? Tell us in the comments below!
