Dancing with the Stars Season 29 continued on Monday night with the ninth week of competition. This week, the couples each danced twice. That included several dance-offs in which the couples danced side by side, for a chance at bonus points.
Tonight was Icons Night, as the contestants paid tribute to the musical artists that inspired them, from Madonna to Freddie Mercury. The night also included not one, but two perfect scores. Unfortunately, one of those couples ended up in the bottom two.
Viewers voted during the show, and at the end of the night, one couple was eliminated. Check out the week’s performances in the videos below, and read on to find out who went home.
Justina Machado & Sasha Farber
Justina paid tribute to her icon Madonna with a rumba routine set to “Crazy For You.” Bruno Tonioli called it “the gentle side of Madonna,” telling Justina to “engage those hips” more. Carrie Ann Inaba said she wanted Justina’s movements to be bigger.
Nelly & Daniella Karagach
Nelly paid tribute to Tupac by dancing jazz to “California Love.” Bruno said he was “cool, confident, in your element,” but “missed a couple of steps.” Derek Hough said it was “so much fun” and “celebratory.”
AJ McLean & Cheryl Burke
AJ paid tribute to Freddie Mercury by dancing the Viennese waltz to “Somebody to Love” by Queen. Carrie Ann said it started strong, but he lost it as it went on. Derek told him to be aware of his face, and be more relaxed.
Kaitlyn Bristowe & Artem Chigvintsev
Kaitlyn danced the Argentine tango to “Toxic” by Britney Spears. Derek said she’s lacked “impact” until this dance. Carrie Ann gave Kaitlyn a standing ovation, saying “everything about it was amazing.”
Johnny Weir & Britt Stewart
Johnny paid tribute to Amy Winehouse with a quickstep set to “Valerie.” Bruno said it was “excellent” and “precise.” Carrie Ann complimented their “power” and “passion” and how they used the whole dance floor.
Skai Jackson & Alan Bersten
Skai paid tribute to Janet Jackson with a pasodoble set to the song “If.” Derek described Skai as “strong, powerful, and confident.” Bruno called it a “grown-up” dance, and said Skai “lived up to it.” Both Derek and Bruno advised her to work on her arm movements.
Nev Schulman & Jenna Johnson
Nev paid tribute to Elton John, dancing the jive to “Saturday Night’s Alright.” Derek praised Nev’s charisma. Bruno complimented the theatricality and characterization. Carrie Ann said it was a “pleasure to watch.” Thanks to their cumulative scores, Nev and Jenna won immunity from tonight’s second round, and received two bonus points.
Cha-Cha: Justina vs. Kaitlyn
Justina and Kaitlyn faced off in a side-by-side dance-off to the cha-cha, set to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.” Carrie Ann said they were like “sugar and spice.” The Dancing with the Stars judges voted for Justina as the winner, awarding her two bonus points.
Salsa: Skai vs. Nelly
Skai and Nelly danced the salsa side by side to “The Cup of Life” by Ricky Martin. Carrie Ann called it “new school vs. old school.” The judges voted for Skai, who received two bonus points.
Jive: AJ vs. Johnny
AJ and Johnny danced the jive side by side to “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham! Carrie Ann said it was the “hardest of the dances.” The judges voted for AJ, who received two bonus points.
