‘Cuomo Crush’ and ‘Fauci Fever’ — Sexualization Of These Men Is a Real Thing on The Internet
Is your timeline flooded with people declaring their love for the NY Governor Andrew Cuomo (and his brother Chris) or Dr. Fauci? You are definitely not alone. The COVID-19 pandemic has led brothers Andrew and Chris Cuomo and Dr. Anthony Fauci to the forefront of COVID news and updates, but it also started a trend of people confessing their ‘love’ or ‘crush’ on these men. It seems these days you cannot turn on the news without seeing one of these men on your screen and some people really like them…..or maybe even love them! What is this new phenomenon? and where does it come from?
The ‘Cuomo Crush’ Phenomenon
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was interviewed by his brother, CNN reporter Chris Cuomo that quickly turned into playful banter.
“I love you, I’m proud of what you’re doing. I know you’re working hard for your state but no matter how hard you’re working there’s always time to call mom,” Chris said.
Governor Cuomo quickly retorted “She said I was her favorite, the good news is she said you’re her second favorite.”
This sent the internet into a frenzy with people declaring their love for the Cuomo brothers and even starting the hashtag #cuomocrush. It seems people are also pleased with Governor Cuomo’s response to the pandemic, urging people to stay at home and enforcing work-from-home orders.
One Twitter user called the Cuomo brothers: “two bright lights in a dark time.”
The declarations of love and crushes for the Cuomo’s just keeps on coming.
A writer for the Times Union who coffesses not to be a huge Cuomo fan, declared in a headline ‘I Have a Crush on Governor Cuomo’. Another writer for Vogue magazine who is a harsh critic of the Governor, writes: “But what a difference a pandemic makes. All of a sudden, I love Governor Cuomo” One Twitter user even said his wife and all of his friends in New York have a crush on Governor Cuomo.
The two engaged in another playful exchange on ABC7 after it was revealed that Chris has coronavirus. However, he still seemed to be in good spirits and continues to work. This prompted some people to declare that they are “cuomosexuals.”
The Theories Behind the Cuomo Crush
The Stockholm Syndrome Theory: This theory is offered by writer Rebecca Fishbein in a piece for Jezebel titled, “Help, I Think I’m in Love With Andrew Cuomo??. Rebecca calls it “Stockholm Syndrome” which the Webster dictionary defines as ‘the psychological tendency of a hostage to bond with, identify with, or sympathize with his or her captor.’
Fishbein explains: “Cuomo isn’t holding me hostage so much as coronavirus is, but he is the only one telling me what to do, where I can and cannot go (anywhere), who I can and cannot see (everyone), who I can and cannot listen to (President Trump, Bill de Blasio), what I can and cannot eat (anything but pasta).” She refers to him as “the control freak we need right now”.
The thirsty for sex theory: With all the long and deep explanations offered by media opinion writers, this short and sweet theory offered by musical artist Mel Stone may just be the plain truth. Stone wrote in tweet on March 22: “You’re not crushing on Andrew Cuomo, you’re cis het and haven’t had sex for a week”. Perhaps it is as simple as that.
People Falling in Love With Dr. Fauci
Dr. Anthony Fauci is the top American infectious disease specialist and has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984. He has become a trusted voice and the public face of the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr. Fauci has also debunked a lot of myths and misconceptions about the virus and has really become a man of the people. Viewers admire his candor and the fact that he does not hold back when it comes to delivering facts and the reality of the world crisis. But being the man of the hour can take unexpected turns and it seems that Fauci’s popularity is turning into a fever, often even sexualized.
People did not refrain from expressing their #Faucifever online. They even started a petition to name him the “Sexiest Man Alive.”
Some people even have it in their hearts to love both Andrew Cuomo and Dr. Fauci. Who says you have to choose one over the other?
Donuts Delite, a doughnut shop in Rochester, New York, which prints Fauci’s face on edible paper and places it atop buttercream-frosted doughnuts, said it began selling the special donuts to “cheer up” people in the neighborhood.
Fauci Fans Have Created Fauci Swag
For those of us who aren’t into sweets, there’s no shortage of Fauci swag. People are now selling: graphic t-shirts, Dr. Anthony Fauci fan club buttons and even Fauci prayer candles. The list of Fauci merchandise available goes on and on.
Dr. Fauci even made a social distancing appearance for The Daily Social Distancing Show With Trevor Noah. He seemed very calm and collected and answered Noah’s questions showing he has a tremendous wealth of knowledge on coronavirus.
We love that even with all of the stress and chaos going on in the world, people still have it in them to love each other. Not to mention the tweets and playful memes about the Cuomo brothers and Dr. Fauci are adorably hilarious!
