‘Cuomo Crush’ and ‘Fauci Fever’ — Sexualization Of These Men Is a Real Thing on The Internet

Is your timeline flooded with people declaring their love for the NY Governor Andrew Cuomo (and his brother Chris) or Dr. Fauci? You are definitely not alone. The COVID-19 pandemic has led brothers Andrew and Chris Cuomo and Dr. Anthony Fauci to the forefront of COVID news and updates, but it also started a trend of people confessing their ‘love’ or ‘crush’ on these men. It seems these days you cannot turn on the news without seeing one of these men on your screen and some people really like them…..or maybe even love them! What is this new phenomenon? and where does it come from?
The ‘Cuomo Crush’ Phenomenon
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was interviewed by his brother, CNN reporter Chris Cuomo that quickly turned into playful banter.
“I love you, I’m proud of what you’re doing. I know you’re working hard for your state but no matter how hard you’re working there’s always time to call mom,” Chris said.
Governor Cuomo quickly retorted “She said I was her favorite, the good news is she said you’re her second favorite.”
This sent the internet into a frenzy with people declaring their love for the Cuomo brothers and even starting the hashtag #cuomocrush. It seems people are also pleased with Governor Cuomo’s response to the pandemic, urging people to stay at home and enforcing work-from-home orders.
One Twitter user called the Cuomo brothers: “two bright lights in a dark time.”
The declarations of love and crushes for the Cuomo’s just keeps on coming.
A writer for the Times Union who coffesses not to be a huge Cuomo fan, declared in a headline ‘I Have a Crush on Governor Cuomo’. Another writer for Vogue magazine who is a harsh critic of the Governor, writes: “But what a difference a pandemic makes. All of a sudden, I love Governor Cuomo” One Twitter user even said his wife and all of his friends in New York have a crush on Governor Cuomo.
The two engaged in another playful exchange on ABC7 after it was revealed that Chris has coronavirus. However, he still seemed to be in good spirits and continues to work. This prompted some people to declare that they are “cuomosexuals.”
The Theories Behind the Cuomo Crush
The Stockholm Syndrome Theory: This theory is offered by writer Rebecca Fishbein in a piece for Jezebel titled, “Help, I Think I’m in Love With Andrew Cuomo??. Rebecca calls it “Stockholm Syndrome” which the Webster dictionary defines as ‘the psychological tendency of a hostage to bond with, identify with, or sympathize with his or her captor.’
Fishbein explains: “Cuomo isn’t holding me hostage so much as coronavirus is, but he is the only one telling me what to do, where I can and cannot go (anywhere), who I can and cannot see (everyone), who I can and cannot listen to (President Trump, Bill de Blasio), what I can and cannot eat (anything but pasta).” She refers to him as “the control freak we need right now”.
The thirsty for sex theory: With all the long and deep explanations offered by media opinion writers, this short and sweet theory offered by musical artist Mel Stone may just be the plain truth. Stone wrote in tweet on March 22: “You’re not crushing on Andrew Cuomo, you’re cis het and haven’t had sex for a week”. Perhaps it is as simple as that.
